Visiting Google Reader is essential for most of us because it’s so efficient. But while it beats opening a dozen tabs every morning, it’s not the best way to browse news.

Apps and programs like Flipboard, Pulse and Readefine plug into your Google Reader and present its content in a visually pleasing, easy-to-read fashion.

The newest app to do that is Newsify, released for the iPad and iPhone last month.

The app draws design inspiration from Flipboard, but has a much tighter focus on offering only Google Reader content. It loads smaller pictures than Flipboard does, and shows more stories per page.

Head-to-head

How does Newsify measure up against Flipboard? To test it, we loaded the Livemint Lounge RSS feed (https://bit.ly/NdUFyg) to see what the experience was like on both apps.

Flipboard is geared towards laid-back reading. With just a few articles on each page, huge pictures and stylish transition animations, it’s a great way to browse through the Lounge feed.

Newsify, on the other hand, looks nice but packs in a lot more functionality. Flipping through all of the articles in Lounge took only a few swipes, making it much faster when you’re looking for specific content. Configurable gestures let you make your own swipe short cuts for refreshing feeds, loading the next story or sharing on Facebook.

Newsify also supports two-way sync with Google Reader, folders and feed management, and quick sharing of articles. These features make it much more powerful than Flipboard, where you need to tap on multiple buttons for the same results. Newsify also has full offline cacheing of articles and images, so you can sync it using Wi-Fi, then read the articles on the go, without having to use 3G.

Flipboard wins in the wide range of content available—it can plug into your social networks and display content in the same magazine layout, and there are the sections as well. But when it comes to dealing with RSS logjams, Newsify wins.

Newsify is a paid app, costing $0.99 (around 55), available on the iTunes app store. No Android version has been announced.
