Lack of sleep can cause diabetes and heart disease

People who sleep less than six hours every day are at greater risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke, warns a South Korean study. The researchers used two lifestyle surveys that included questions about sleep habits. The study involved 2,600 adult participants who underwent medical exams and also shared their medical history. After studying their responses, the researchers found that participants who didn’t get at least six hours of sleep were 41% more likely to develop metabolic syndrome than individuals who slept for six to eight hours regularly. The findings were published in journal Sleep. Read more here.

Cheese can be as addictive as drugs

A new study claims cheese can be addictive as it contains a protein called casein. As casein goes into body, it releases a compound called casomorphins, which actually contain small amounts of naturally-occurring morphine. It activates opioid receptors in the brain, which are responsible for addiction. Researchers from University of Michigan enlisted 500 students, divided them into two groups and asked them to fill out the Yale Food Addiction Scale to see which food item was more addictive. Though casein is present in milk, it is present in a small quantity. Since the content of milk used in the preparation of cheese is higher, the level of casein is also high.

Pizza, which contains a lot of cheese in the form of toppings, was the most addictive food item in their study. Read more here.

Job burnout can lead to depression

Job burnout caused by workplace stress can increase the chances of depression, shows research. Researchers from University of Neuchatel, Switzerland talked to 1,386 public school teachers teaching in pre-K to 12th grade across the United States during the 2013-14 academic year and found that 86% of the teachers in the burnout showed signs of depression. Teachers in the burnout group were also three times more likely to have a history of depression, and four times as likely to be using anti-depressant as compared to teachers who didn’t feel stressed. The research was published in The Journal of Clinical Psychology. Read more here.

Unsaturated fats can reduce risk of heart disease

Including unsaturated fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids found in walnuts and tofu, in daily diet can reduce risk of heart disease, claims research. Researchers from three different institutes in United States, studied Nurses’ Health Study involving 84,628 healthy women, and Health Professional Follow-up Study which covered 42,908 healthy men. The study assessed their diet by a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire after every four years for 30 years. The researchers found that the risk of heart disease was lower in those people who replaced saturated fats with unsaturated fatty acids in their diet. The research was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Read more here.

Showing gratitude towards partner is the key to happy marriage

People who regularly thank their partners are more likely to be happily married, claims study. Researchers from University of Georgia prepared a set of questions on financial well-being, demand/withdraw communication and expressions of spousal gratitude. 468 married individuals volunteered for the study. The findings showed expression of gratitude was the most consistent significant predictor of marital quality. “We found that feeling appreciated and believing that your spouse values you directly influences how you feel about your marriage, how committed you are to it, and your belief that it will last," said study co-author Ted Futris. The study shows that higher levels of spousal gratitude expressions can also reduce thoughts about divorce in both men and women. The research was published in the journal Personal Relationships.
