Mint Indulge's interiors and spaces issue focuses on the prevalent trends in modern interiors

Premium

Technology was supposed to make everything better. Newspapers, companies, governments, homes, jobs, restaurants, cat photos…and so on. And while the extent to which it has made things better is a matter of some debate, there is one indisputable fact: the Internet and associated technology have changed the way we think about things, make them and use them.

Homes are a great case in point. I’ve changed several flats over the last few years, and in each case I’ve lost innumerable hours of sleep fretting over when I’ll get the Internet up and running. Heating? Air-conditioning? Hot water supply? Who cares? Give. Me. My. Internet.

Kitchens have been designed around the gadgets I like to use while cooking. Living rooms and bedrooms have been modelled around the video entertainment system installed in them. And no part of the house has had greater thought and effort poured into it like the study/workstation.

Technology, in other words, is fundamentally changing the way we think about the spaces we live in and how we live in them.

This issue of Indulge, our interiors and spaces issue, approaches the topic from two perspectives. First of all we try to understand, from a conceptual perspective, about the prevalent trends in modern interiors, We speak to experts, gadget designers and furniture makers. What do they think about, when they think about a new space?

One of our more involved projects in this issue was drawing up a list of great homes of the last two centuries or so, and then presenting the key lessons from each one. What do they inspire you, the home owner and home maker, to do?

The second perspective, and our favourite, has all to do with the objects that form and enable our living spaces. I am particularly fond of the pages with all the clocks in them. Clocks are kind of like men’s hats. They used to be a staple not that long ago, and one of the great ‘social’ objects—what type of clock you owned and how you displayed it said much about who you were and what kind of life you lived.

But today men don’t wear hats (sigh) and home-owners really don’t think all that much about clocks. Which is a pity. Because, as you will see, there are some really cool clocks out there in the market.

We hope this issue of Indulge inspires you to shake thing up a little. Perhaps you will buy a new clock, a new kitchen scale…or perhaps even a new home. Keep us posted.
