The Gaysi Zine

Gaysi Family, a literary website for members of the LGBT community, is launching India’s first queer journal The Gaysi Zine. The launch will bring together a panel of authors and collaborators such as Priya Gangwani (editor of The Gaysi Zine) and Parvati Sharma for a dicussion on sexuality and gender and readings of a few works on queerness.

After a gap of six years Lahore-based artist Muhammad Zeeshan is showcasing his work in India. In this solo exhibition, the artist presents 12 works that combine the intricacy of traditional miniatures with contemporary elements of pop art using laser scoring and gouache on wasli paper. The 33-year-old artist started out as a billboard painter and studied miniature art at the National College of Arts, Lahore.

This group exhibition curated by Rupika Chawla will feature works by Anita Dube, Anjolie Ela Menon, Anupam Sud, Atul Dodiya, B. Manjunath Kamath, Chandra Bhattacharjee, Chintan Upadhyay, Dileep Sharma, G.R. Iranna, Gopi Krishna, Himanshu Verma, Jagannath Panda and Jayasri Burman, among others. All the works have been inspired by Raja Ravi Varma’s oleographs.

Krintan and Friends of Music present this festival dedicated to string instruments. Among those performing on Day 1 are Akhu Chingangbam of rock group Imphal Talkies; Trondheim Soloists and Xiang Yu; and Norwegian guitarist Knut Reiersrud. Day 2 features band Mrigya, Greg Lawson, Donald Shaw, Nigel Richard and Ross Ainslie; Igor Bezget; and the Trondheim Soloists featuring violinist Atle Sponberg.

Bookaroo

Into its sixth edition, Bookaroo has sessions and programmes for children and adults in the open spaces of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). The city’s popular literature festival brings speakers from across India as well as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, the US and UK. It also boasts of a stellar list of authors, illustrators and storytellers, including Ashok Banker, Cornelia Funke, Gen Ian Cardozo and Venita Coelho. More than 20 publishers of children’s and young adult titles will also be participating.

Based on a Punjabi novel of the same title by Gurdial Singh, this 2011 film portrays the plight of those living in a village in Punjab. The residents are facing hardships due to the local landlord who has sold his plots to an industry, resulting in a villager’s house being torn down. The rickshaw-pullers in a nearby town have gone on a strike that turns violent, affecting the life of the immigrant trying to make a living in the city. The film has been directed by Gurvinder Singh.

The Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan will co-present the popular Bengali play Jalchabi by Kolkata-based theatre group Ranroop. The protagonist is Mrinmoyee, a faded, 40-plus beauty who was once known as the “Nafisa Ali of Narapur", but has metamorphosed into a mad woman, murderess and, finally, the image of her own hapless mother. The play is directed by Seema Mukhopadhyay and adapted from The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. 1 hour, 50 minutes.
