Ranga Shankara will host a series of workshops to introduce children aged 7-16 to activities such as theatre, puppetry and dance. Theatre company Katkatha’s Anurupa Roy will introduce shadow puppetry; dancer Kapila Venu will teach them about Koodiyattam; and Gunduraju (who uses one name) will teach participants how to make leather puppets.

Phonetics and speech classes

14 April-12 January

My Little Chatterbox, a online-offline book club, will conduct a series of classes to teach children how to read and write English using phonetics, grammar and storytelling. The classes will cater to two age groups—New Bees, for 3.5-6 years, and Buzzing Bees, for 6-8 years. While the New Bees will learn letter sounds, letter formation and spelling on Mondays and Fridays over nine months, the Buzzing Bees will learn grammar and comprehension on Mondays and Fridays till September.

Nasa Summer Carnival

14-25 April

Education centre Stem Champ will conduct a series of workshops in two batches, for children in pre-school and up to class II, and those in classes III-VII. The topics for the first group include orbiting earth, stargazing, spotting planets, robotics and the natural world.

The topics for the second group include planets and their moons, the atmosphere of the planets, space travel, space technology, living in space and rocket science. Children will get participation certificates from the US’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa).

Legends of Rock

The Blue Birds, considered to be Chennai’s original rock ‘n’ roll group, are back with a tribute to the greatest rock legends, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple. Theatre group Boardwalkers is organizing the event under the banner “The Buzz—Living Performances”.

Yanni

14 April

Greek pianist, keyboardist and music producer Yiannis Chryssomallis, aka Yanni, returns to perform in India for the second time in almost two decades. The artiste, who is on a world tour, will play live at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. He will also perform in Bangalore on 18 April.

Yanni performed live at the Taj Mahal in Agra for three consecutive evenings in March 1997.

In The Believers, Delhi-based photographer Jordi Pizarro looks at 10 countries across four continents to document how communities are formed through religion and how beliefs are reinforced by preserving tradition. Pizarro also “sets out to demonstrate that faith and the practice of religion are intrinsically linked to human life and even though cultural practices of faiths may differ, the pursuit for truth remains common to all”.

Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book The Poetics of Space, this performance, choreographed by Mandeep Raikhy, uses Bharatanatyam as a metaphor for architectural spaces waiting to be inhabited. Raikhy will perform with Manju Sharma, Devaraj Thimmaiah, Chandana Sarma, Lalit Khatana and Rajat Bakshi.

InContext: public.art.ecology—Food Edition III

The Khoj International Artists’ Association is curating the third edition of its InContext:public.art.ecology—Food Edition III residency, which aims to generate conversation around ecological issues like food sustainability and agriculture through artistic projects and interventions.

This time, artists-in-residence Ravi Agarwal, Leone Contini, Simran Chopra, Suvani Suri, Sandeep Dang, Srishti Lakhera, Sunandita Mehrotra, Mona Gandhi, Rabbya Naseer and Hurmat ul Ain are presenting works ranging from video works and sculptures to performance pieces.

The Art Heritage Gallery and The Seagull Foundation for Arts are presenting artworks by K.G. Subramanyan on the occasion of the artist’s 90th birthday. Born in Kerala in the early 1920s and educated at the Presidency College, Chennai, and in Santiniketan, West Bengal, Subramanyan is a versatile artist who works with diverse materials as a painter, muralist, printmaker, sculptor and designer.

Death of a Salesman

Directed by Alyque Padamsee, Death of a Salesman is based on American playwright Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play about love and hate. Padamsee, who also stars in Death of a Salesman, plays the role of Willy Loman, an ageing salesman in 1940s America. The production also stars Sabira Merchant, Farrokh Mehta and Neel Tolani, among others.

The Delhi Crafts Council is presenting its annual summer textiles exhibition, Kairi. The exhibition includes saris, ‘dupattas’ and fabrics.

Theatre group Natadha is marking the completion of 40 years in the performing arts with a five-day festival. It will stage six plays, including Megh Namey, an adaptation of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya; Eka Tughlaq, based on the life of Muhammad bin Tughlaq, the sultan of Delhi from 1325-51; and Caesar O Cleopatra, set in the Egypt of Julius Caesar’s time. Caesar O Cleopatra, inspired from a work by playwright George Bernard Shaw, has been given a contemporary twist and deals with politics, aggression, ambition and love.
