A picture of perfection

Full 3D HD projectors are finally arriving in India, but the price is steep

Setting up a home theatre is an admirable goal, but there’s a lot you need to make it work—the right inputs and speakers, and most importantly, the display. A good projector is a must since it gives much more flexibility in terms of image adjustment and size than a TV.

We tried out the new BenQ W7000 and were quite impressed. One of the features that stands out is the full 3D HD support—most projectors on the market are 3D ready, which means they only accept some types of 3D signals. The BenQ W7000 can play movies using a Blu-ray player, TV set-top box, or a PS3 video-game console.

This comes at a price, and if 3D isn’t a feature you consider important, it’s not worth the money. For 3D, though, BenQ W7000 a fantastic option.

The lens is in the centre of the 428mm-wide device, and comes with a handy lens shift feature—this allows you to adjust the position of the image without moving the projector. You can add a little height with the help of four adjustable feet if you’re using it as a shelf-mounted projector. This can help get the picture at the right height without distorting the image.

There’s a 2000 ANSI lumen lamp which is bright enough to be used in the daytime with a tubelight directly opposite the screen. The image was still clearly visible for DTH feed (movies are usually shot with darker frames than television content). Movie-watching suffers a little in these conditions, of course—the night looked more blue than black while watching The Dark Knight on Blu-ray. Without the room lights, though, the picture looks great—the last few projectors from BenQ have enjoyed great contrast ratios, and the BenQ W7000 is no exception. It is rated with a contrast ratio of 50,000:1, and the quality is apparent when your input source is high quality too.

Features

The projector takes 2 HDMI inputs, a VGA input, one component and one S-video input, along with a 9-pin jack, so you should be able to connect all your media devices easily. What’s interesting is that they have a picture-in-picture mode, so you can, for example, watch TV in a small window while getting your main input from the HDMI feed.
