“This is just a wannabe Rang De Basanti,” I heard a teenager say at the Friday morning show of Kabir Sadanand’s Fugly out of exasperation. His remark followed a scene where a group of four friends decide the only way to get themselves out of a terrible trap (of their own making) is to bring their case out in the open. So the hunk of the group, Dev (Mohit Marwah), decides to immolate himself in front of India Gate and the media, but first the four do a “group hug”.
Dev, Devi (Kiara Advani), Gaurav (Vijender Singh) and Aditya (Arfi Lamba) reach this point of no return because of entrapment by a ruthless, unscrupulous, corrupt deputy commissioner of police Chautala (Jimmy Shergill, all menacing).
It all begins when a local shopkeeper feels up Devi. When Devi retaliates by slapping him, he humiliates her publicly. Her testosterone-fuelled friends, embarrassingly lacking in intellect, decide to avenge her. This sets off a messy chain of events that leads to murder, extortion, farm parties, kidnapping, spotlighting of the politician-police nexus, etc.
The narrative moves between the present and five years earlier. The shabby screenplay hastily fills in the blanks on what brought Dev to this extreme step.
Fugly is faux-righteous, and the punctured script makes it silly, pretentious and technically wanting. The acting too is extremely patchy. The four newcomers are unable to bring any depth to the poorly etched characters that pay lip service to headlines and social networking-driven angst.
Fugly released in theatres on Friday.
