Joseph O’Neill’s novel Netherland about Hans van den Broek, a Dutch banker living in New York who finds redemption in a cricketing community of migrants, was one of the best novels to appear last year. O’Neill, a former banker himself and a member of the Staten Island Cricket Club, was praised for his rich narrative voice. O’Neill listed the names of five books that he loves revisiting:

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

Collected Poems By Wallace Stevens

Herzog By Saul Bellow

Self-Consciousness By John Updike

(The descriptions of the books were not in the writer’s words and have hence been dropped)
