To be built on an elevated site above the Waterworks River in the Olympic Park in London, the BMW pavilion is a site to see even in the 3D-rendered form in architect Kapil Gupta’s iPhone.

Gupta and co-founder Christopher Lee of the British firm Serie Architects—known in India for having designed blueFROG in Delhi and Mumbai and The Tote restaurant—beat back six others in a competition to design BMW’s pavilion, between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Center, at the London Olympics this year. The BMW Group is the official automotive partner to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Serie Architects, which has offices in London, Mumbai and Beijing, won the BD Young Architect of the Year Award for 2010.

The pavilion will have a floor space of 800 sq. m. There’s a striking “water curtain" feature which will use water from the river to cool the building before returning the filtered water back to the river. The structure will be built of steel with high recycled content, and the use of carbon-intensive materials such as concrete has been minimized. The top floor will house nine stand-alone pavilions, which will be used to highlight BMW’s latest cars. The lower floor will house exhibits, articulating the German automotive’s vision for sustainable mobility and support for Team GB (Great Britain) and ParalympicsGB athletes. The company expects over 8,000 visitors to visit the BMW pavilion each day during the Olympics.
