It is hard to believe that Hauz Khas Village, or HKV as it is colloquially known, is supposed to be New Delhi’s coolest hang-out. The main lane is B-list; dust hangs in the air from the never-ending construction; emaciated men, standing listlessly, carry placards advertising the newest hot spots.
HKV abounds with the furious energy of a special economic zone. A new month equals a new watering hole. From Mysuru to Moscow, the menu in these restaurants, cafés and bars promise items from across the world, or at least have names that evoke the place of their origin. One restaurant is simply named Hamburg to Hoshiarpur.
The Capital’s gourmands may, however, be affronted by the authenticity of the dishes. Tuck into tabbouleh that no Beirutian would recognize; nibble on tapas that no self-respecting Catalan would stomach. But that’s not the point. The food on offer in New Delhi’s most happening zone mirrors the sophistication of the people who crowd the place daily.
