Mumbai: It’s been 20 years since Forrest Gump sat on a bench and drew parallels between life and chocolate. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Robert Zemeckis movie, starring Tom Hanks as a slow-thinking, omnipresent, all-American hero who unwittingly makes history, PVR Cinemas and Paramount Pictures India will re-release Forrest Gump on 12 September for a week. The re-release will be restricted to IMAX screens, and will take place after a similar reappearance in cinemas across the US on 5 September.

PVR Cinemas has two IMAX screens, each in Mumbai and Bangalore. A senior executive from Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd, which distributes Paramount titles in India, confirmed the re-release and said that there was a possibility that the movie would also open on the IMAX screen operated by BIG Cinemas in Mumbai, but declined further comment as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Re-releases of Hollywood classics in new formats—3D, IMAX—is hardly new. The 3D reissue of Titanic was released in India in English, Tamil and Telugu two years ago. Forrest Gump won’t face too much competition on the IMAX screens, since there is no major film in the format opening that week. Among the non-IMAX movies opening on the same date are the Hindi comedy Finding Fanny, the Hindi 3D horror film Creature, and the Hollywood frightener Deliver Us From Evil.
