Kitchen Garden by the team behind beloved French crêperie Suzette is a bright and cheery space with floor to ceiling windows and nearly half the restaurant space dedicated to an open kitchen and a D-I-Y salad bar. A dreamy mint green colour scheme with blonde wood furniture and al fresco section can make you forget you’re actually at a busy intersection in Pali Naka.

Grab a basket from their grab-and-go fridge, fill it up with goodies like Chocolate and Walnut Cookies, mini pots of Waldorf Style Salad and an Apple Raspberry Crumble, make your own sandwich on their prized sourdough and pair it with a bottle of their signature cold brew coffees. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better place to break for an impromptu picnic.

The good stuff

Suzette founders Jérémie Sabbagh, Pierre Labail and Antonia Achache have championed the use of high-quality, organic and locally-sourced produce since they set up their first café at Nariman Point in 2011 and you can always tell when you dine at their outlets. Kitchen Garden is no different, with nearly 90% of the ingredients certified organic and sourced directly from farmers and manufacturers—the salad leaves come from a farm run by a couple of engineers near Pune, the cheese from Goloka Farms in Gujarat and the coffee from Blue Tokai Roasters. Only a handful of products like avocado, chocolate and ham are imported and there’s no denying a salad here tastes far superior to what we’re used to eating at deli and café chains.

For an early, post-workout dinner, we picked classic sandwich combinations like Roasted Veggies ( 420) in pesto with mozzarella and a ham and cheddar with Dijon mustard ( 400) and instantly fell in love with the in-house, crisp-crusted sourdough. It’s also available to buy at 230 for half a loaf and 450 for a full loaf (about 900gms). Just like at Suzette, our salads were fresh, well balanced and loaded—The Greek ( 380) and the Energy Bowl ( 330) made with bulgur, baby spinach, roasted beets, sweet potatoes and apple in a honey, Dijon mustard and balsamic dressing. We were especially impressed with the creamy feta in both salads and the spicy-sweet cashews and almonds in the Energy Bowl.

There was no real need for dessert after we gulped down the addictive Powerhouse smoothie ( 230), made with bananas, dates, almond butter and cocoa, but we still opted for the Apple Raspberry Crumble ( 280) made with light-as-air mascarpone and a buttery hazelnut crumble. Luckily, the owners exercise portion control with their desserts, so we didn’t have to worry about cheating on our diet. Speaking of diets, if you’re not on one, we highly recommend taking home a bag of their gluten-free Belgian chocolate granola ( 125 for 150gms and 500 for 400gms).

The not-so-good

There isn’t a whole lot to not love at Kitchen Garden. One of the things we miss most here are the freshly pressed juices from Suzette, there are only bottled and branded bottles of cold-pressed juices here. The sandwich spreads are sort of same old, same old with just hummus, pesto, tapenade and tzatziki as options. The sweet potatoes used in our Energy Bowl ( 330) salad were stale and tough.

Talk plastic

Mix-and-match salads and sandwiches start at 180 with toppings, proteins, cheese, dressings and extras ranging from 30 for raw veggies to 230 for grilled prawns and 350 for half a Haas avocado. We paid around 2,600 for two smoothies, two sandwiches, a salad, a soup and a dessert.
