Prabhakar Barwe’s Kora Canvas published by Mouj Prakashan, came out in 1989. After completing his art education at the JJ School of Art, Mumbai, Barwe—known for his paintings of mundane objects, rendered rarefied by his symbolic-abstractionist style—worked with the Weavers’ Service Centre in Varanasi and gained expertise in Tantra philosophy with extensive and immersive study. He returned to Mumbai, the city closest to Naigaon, Maharashtra, where he was born to a family of artists. In the 1980s, he was part of the city’s cultural ferment, active in soirees of Kala Ghoda’s art coteries. In his introduction to the artist in The Blank Canvas, the newly translated version of Barwe’s book by Jesal Thacker’s Bodhana publication, art critic and curator Ranjit Hoskote says this book was a lasting outcome of Barwe’s interactions with fellow artists of these years. Jerry Pinto has translated the essays on elemental ideas about art practice.
