Our pick of the freshest, most exciting acts in the country and why you should listen to them
Big power chords, heavy backbeats, squiggly lines of electronica running in the backdrop, Blek are one part rollicking rock, one part grunge, one part electronica, and all parts rabble rouser. A three-piece Mumbai band formed in 2010, when its members were still in college, Blek released their debut album, Hexes+Drama & Other Reasons For Evacuation this year. Jared Creado, Varoon Aiyer and Rishi Bradoo were regulars on Mumbai’s underground gig scene, which is what inspired them to start writing songs.
Blek ooze rock and punk swagger, but are not afraid to experiment with electronic sounds and infectious dance grooves, giving their music an immediacy and edge that is a joy at live shows.
“The original idea of rock music is choking and limiting," Bradoo says. “We’re in a fantastic time for music where genres are losing meaning." Hexes+Drama is available for free download on www.ennuidotbomb.com.
