As Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo readies for release on 12 November, fans and audiences are hoping it would recreate the magic that is synonymous with the blockbuster Diwali season.

1. Happy New Year (2014): Farah Khan’s heist film released last year, despite poor reviews, entered the 100 crore club in its opening weekend itself. The multi-starrer, complete with songs, dances, comedy, action and lots of bling, earned a total of 203 crore in India and another 90 crore worldwide.

2. Krrish 3 (2013): Hrithik Roshan’s science fiction film was the third instalment in the superhero series his father Rakesh Roshan started with Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) followed by Krrish (2006). Loved for its ambitious scale, action and special effects, the film earned 245 crore within the country and nearly 40 crore internationally.

3. Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012): Set in London, Jab Tak hai Jaan was the typical Yash Chopra romance, released less than a month after the iconic filmmaker passed away. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, the film earned Rs120 crore in India and nearly Rs80 crore overseas despite mixed reviews. The film clashed with Ajay Devgn-starrer Son of Sardaar at the box office amid much controversy.

4. Om Shanti Om (2007): The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer was a rebirth saga directed by Farah Khan. Set partly in the Indian film industry of the 1970s, the film earned nearly 70 crore at the box office, beating Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, released at the same time, that marked the debut of star kids like Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.

5. Don (2006): A remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer, Farhan Akhtar’s 2006 directed film featured Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. The film made close to 25 crore at the box office, surpassing the other release that week, Jaan-E-Mann, which featured Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta.

6. Veer-Zaara (2004): The Yash Chopra-directed romantic drama starred Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji. The film earned 40 crore at the box office and managed the best opening for a Hindi film that year in the US and UK markets. It outdid the collections of other releases that week, which included Abbas-Mustan’s Aitraaz and Ram Gopal Varma’s Naach.

7. Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999): Sooraj Barjatya’s musical drama brought together a host of actors to reinforce the idea that family is above all. The song, dance and food extravaganza paid off with the movie earning 28 crore at the box office and emerging as the biggest hit that year.

8. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998): Karan Johar’s by now iconic directorial debut was a trendsetting film for its time. It earned more than 40 crore at the box office in India and is considered one of the highest-grossing Indian films overseas. The National Award-winning movie had released along with Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda’s comedy Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

9. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997): The musical romance directed by Yash Chopra was a love triangle between Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor. The film, remembered to this day for its foot-tapping music and youthful dance sequences, earned 28 crore at the box office, besides bagging three national awards.

10. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995): There aren’t too many films more loved in India than Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Probably the most popular film out of the Yash Raj stable, it netted around 60 crore during its release and continues to inspire spin-offs 20 years later. The Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol-starrer celebrated 1,000 weeks of playing at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir last December.
