LeEco Le2 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 3: How the cameras fare

We compare the real-world performance of the two 16-megapixel cameras in the LeEco Le 2 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

Chinese smartphone company LeEco has made a lot of buzz with its recent high-configuration yet low-cost smartphones such as LeMax 2 and the Le2. The more expensive LeMax 2 made quite an impact even though it still faces stiff competition from another recently launched OnePlus 3. The more affordable Le2, priced at 11,999, offers some impressive features too. One of them is the wide 16-megapixel camera, which supports phase detection technology. This allows it to lock focus on objects in less than a second by itself.

The phone’s camera app offers some additional modes and filters. A few modes such as slow motion and panorama are lined up on the main camera interface, while the filters can be accessed by tapping on the icons on the top. Surprisingly, there aren’t many filters in it. The other notable highlight of the camera app is that it allows users to alter the picture size from 16 megapixels to 12 megapixels, which offer a slightly wider 16:9 aspect ratio. You can also adjust the white balance, ISO and contrast.

It is up against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 ( 9,999 onwards) which also packs in a 16-megapixel camera and uses laser focus to get instant focus on objects. The filters are pretty limited too, but it offers some interesting modes which are not present in the Le2, such as straighten mode, scene mode and tilt shift.

White flower

There is a difference of night and day between the two photos. The Le2’s photo is not properly illuminated, and seems as though it is a low-light shot, though this photo was taken during the daytime. In the Le2, the white in the flower looks dull, and the leaves around it are terribly under-exposed. You can hardly tell one leaf from another in the background.

The Redmi Note 3 reproduces a brighter photo, as well as better colours, sharpness and detailing. The green in the background looks clearer and distinct.

Winner: Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

Colour of a biscuit

In this close-up shot of a biscuit in natural light, the Redmi Note captures the texture on the biscuit much better than the Le2. Even the colour looks a lot richer than in the Le2 shot, which makes the Redmi Note 3’s camera a better bet.

Street view

LeEco impresses with its colour reproduction in this photo. What stands out is the fact that the Le2 manages to suppress noise very well, apparent when you zoom in on the photo. In fact, the Redmi Note 3’s photo isn’t very clear after zooming in. Le2 tends to darken objects in non-focus areas, which is the only drawback.

Winner: LeEco Le2

Lamp in daylight

This a daytime shot of a lamp with white background and green shade (not visible in the picture). The lamp looks brighter in the Redmi Note 3, but the good bit is that the green shadow is also captured on the wall behind the lamp. The Le2 has failed to capture the green tint, and also smudges out the texture of the wall and ceiling, while the colour on the lamp and the leaf looks slightly washed out.

Winner: Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

Statue under white light

This is an indoor shot taken under white light. The colours look a lot more realistic in the Redmi Note 3, but the amount of detail the Le2 has mustered is quite superior. Also, when you zoom in, the level of noise is higher in the Redmi Note 3 than in the Le2.

Winner: Too close to call

Verdict

Overall, the camera of LeEco Le2 is a mixed bag. While it captures colours well in daylight, it struggles with close-ups and sometimes does not illuminate the scene properly. The Redmi Note 3 tends to brighten images and also captures light better at times. Overall, the Redmi Note 3’s camera is slightly better than the Le 2 as it did better in three out of the five parameters.
