Constructing (The Memory of a Room V)
8 October
Constructing (The Memory of a Room Constructing the Memory of a Room V) is Gargi Raina’s first show in almost seven years but she doesn’t want to talk about it. As far as she is concerned, she’s done everything she had to do to make her works accessible. Now the objects, paintings and drawings that reconstruct her memories should speak for themselves when her new show opens this fortnight. 11am-7pm (Mon-Sat). 28 K Dubash Marg, near Rhythm House, Kala Ghoda, Colaba (6610-0124).
The Mattress Factory Works
9 October
Mansi Bhatt is not herself these days. In her solo show, the features of this Mumbai-based artist pop out at us from 10 digital photos in unlikely guises: out of the leering glare of a regal white-plaster Buddha, from the face of a fat man with sagging cheeks in a purple-stripped suit and melded into the contours of a sticky-faced doll in a green smock engaged in poking at big silver stars. 10am-6.30pm (Mon-Fri), 11am-4pm (Sat). 2 Sunny House, 16/18 Mereweather Road, behind Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba (2202-3030).

The Cranes are Flying
5 October
Mikhail Kalatozov’s 1957 war movie was adapted by Viktor Rozov from his own play and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1958. It remains notable for the way its story of a young couple, torn apart by war, stresses human suffering and waste, rather than the heroic struggle foisted on directors by the Stalinist dictates of “Socialist Realism". There is much to admire: the vital performances, notably that of the dark-eyed Tatyana Samojlova as the left-behind Veronika; Sergei Urusevsky’s beautifully composed b/w camerawork; the urgent crowd scenes and dynamic mise-en-scène. 7pm (duration: 1 hour 37 mins). Bhavan’s Cultural Centre, Munshi Nagar, Dadbhai Road, Andheri (W) (3093-8017). Free.

Shruti Sadolikar Katkar
7 October
Ever since she first shot into prominence, Shruti Sadolikar Katkar has been admired for her adherence to the framework of Jaipur Atrauli gharana gayaki. When Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Yupo Gaymo Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam—better known to you and me simply as Senegalese-American hip hop star Akon—performs in the capital this fortnight, expect to see the city’s African community out in full force at the event. Despite his occasionally chauvinistic lyrics, Akon has managed to acquire a strong female following for his dance-friendly music.

The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema
11 October
Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek’s latest intellectual Molotov cocktail, ‘The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema’, a three-part documentary made by Sophie Fiennes, is being screened at the National Centre for the Performing Arts this fortnight. A high-octane close reading of some of the most familiar scenes in cinema, it’s a provocative and wide-ranging declaration of the undoubted ability film has to move, arouse, enlighten and unsettle us. (duration: 2 hours 30 minutes). 6pm. National Centre for the Performing Arts, near Hilton Towers, Nariman Point (6622-3737). Collect free passes from the NCPA box office.
