Painting with natural light

Online talent management portal hosts a workshop with US-based photographer Vincent Versace

I only use a thermonuclear device for lighting photographs," says Vincent Versace, a world-renowned exponent of natural light photography, while referring to the sun. The Los Angeles-based commercial and fine art photographer is in India to conduct photography master classes in association with, an online talent pool and artist management platform. “I’m like a reverse vampire with sunsets as my kryptonite, here to put the fun back into photography," says Versace.

Versace is also a recognized pioneer in digital photography and works as a consultant and beta tester to brands like Nikon, Epson, Adobe Photoshop and X-Rite. He’s also authored the how-to books Welcome to Oz: A Cinematic Approach to Digital Still Photography with Photoshop and From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black and White Conversion Technique Known to Man.

Versace says his workshops are best suited for amateur and professional photographers who have passed the “where-are-the-buttons-on-my-camera" phase and have a good understanding of basic functions and operations of their camera and some fluency in Adobe Photoshop.

“The boon and the bane of digital photography is that it offers total control, so photographs that are ‘just good enough’ are now acceptable," says Versace. “My goal is to get workshop participants to slow down and start with a perfect shot rather than using Photoshop as a verb to fudge the image later."

Every session is tailored to the needs of the students, says Versace, who claims to carry 8 terabytes worth of lessons, files and presentations on the art and science of digital photography to every class. “If there’s still a tutorial I don’t already have, we’ll go ahead and make it happen," says Versace. “At the end of the class, I want students to leave with a perception that the lens is the paintbrush, the camera is the canvas."

Photography Workshop with Vincent Versace will be held on 26 September from 10am-5pm at Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel (West), Mumbai. Fee, 3,370. Click here for registration, call 9049000582.
