Delhi’s Belly | The Nehru-Gandhi Archaeological Park
Mapping the dynasty in the first city of its empire
Hyderabad has the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Mumbai, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and Chennai, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. New Delhi also has well over 60 institutions, landmarks and places named after the Nehru-Gandhi clan, the family that has given India three Congress party prime ministers.
Today, in the midst of a general election, opinion polls suggest the family’s sway is under threat from someone who is a foreigner to the Capital’s traditional power corridors.
As Rahul Gandhi, the 43-year-old inheritor of his family’s legacy, campaigns across the country, it remains to be seen if he can check the decline. No matter what the election results, however, the Nehru-Gandhis have left a mark on history. And perhaps the coming generations will look upon the family with as much awe (or boredom) as we now do in the case of the Tomars, the Mamluks, the Khiljis, the Tughlaqs, the Sayyids, the Lodis, and the Mughals.
