Microsoft has announced a new range of compact notebooks running on a stripped down version of Windows 10, which is called the Windows 10 S. Inspired by Google Chromebooks, these new notebooks are targeted at students and professionals with basic requirements such as web browsing, reading, checking and replying to emails. The first batch of Windows 10 S laptops will start selling in US from July at a starting price of $189.
In case you are looking for something on similar lines but with the experience of real Windows 10 OS, you can consider these light and affordable notebooks.
Dell Inspiron 11 3162
The Inspiron 11 has a compact footprint. It is 22mm thick and weighs just 1.2kg. The 11.6-inch screen comes with anti-glare coating and has a resolution of 1,366x768, which is enough for reading, web browsing and even for watching movies to some extent. This is one of the few notebooks using Intel’s 2.48GHz Celeron N3060 dual core chip at this price point. It has 2GB RAM and offers 32GB storage with the option to add another 64GB via SD cards. It runs Windows 10.
Micromax Canvas Lapbook 1161
Available in black and silver grey shades, the Lapbook 1161’s highlight is its extremely thin profile. It is only 19mm thick and weighs just 1.3kg. The brushed plastic finish gives it a dash of style and would keep smudges at bay. It is driven by Intel’s 1.83GHz Atom quad core processor, has 2GB RAM and runs Windows 10. The 11.6-inch display offers a resolution of 1,366x768p and is big enough for basic use. Its battery backup is quite impressive.
ASUS E402SA comes with a 14-inch display with a resolution of 1,366x768p. The notebook is powered by Intel’s 1.6GHz Celeron N3060 Dual Core processor with 2GB DDR3 RAM. It offers 32GB storage and can accommodate another 32GB via SD cards. It has Windows 10 and gives free access to Asus Web cloud storage. It is 21mm thick, weighs just 1.6kg and is available in dark blue, red and white colour variants. Despite the slim profile, it has a LAN port, VGA, HDMI and two USB ports.
Acer Aspire R11
The Aspire R11 notebook is 20mm thick and weighs 1.5kg. It has coarse plastic finish which looks like fabric. It is notable for its 360-degree hinge design which allows the 11.6-inch (1,366x768p) display to be pushed backwards until it touches the keyboard base and can be used as a touchscreen tablet. This Windows 10 notebook is driven by 1.6GHz Pentium quad core N3710 chip with 4GB RAM and offers 500GB HDD. It is available in blue colour only.
Smartron Tbook T1211
If you are looking for something more sophisticated and powerful on the lines of Microsoft Surface Pro 4, you can consider the Smartron Tbook T1211. It has a compact form factor and hybrid design. The 12-inch (2,560x1,440p) display has flexible metal stand at the back. When attached to the magnetic keyboard cover, it can be used to propel the screen on table and used like a full-fledged notebook. When separate, it can be used a tablet. It runs Windows 10 and is powered by Intel’s 2GHz Core M -5Y10C processor paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD. It can last 6 hours of rigorous use.
