When Comic Con India floated the Indian Comics Convention (simply the “Comic Con" to fans) in Delhi last year, the organizers were thrilled to be throwing an annual party where Indian gaming, graphic novel, cartoon and comics fans could gather, with hundreds “cosplaying"—geek convention language for dressing up as a character you’re a fan of. Last year, 25,000 people showed up and in February, 35,000 came.

Many geek ventures and products will make their first-ever appearance at the Comic Con Express, like the brand new Pipedream Labs, which will launch its Dr Ajax comic series at the con. This Express also focuses on animation in a way previous cons haven’t, with a preview of indie animated movie Delhi Safari and multiple panels focusing on the animation industry.

“Geek culture in India is so different from what you see elsewhere," says Jatin Varma, founder, Comic Con India. “Here a person who’s really into Hindi films and remembers Kanti Shah is a geek, just as the person who remembers every single Nagaraj storyline is a geek, and so also the fan who follows both international and Indian comics. We hope we’re creating events where all fans can come together and understand each other."

With thousands of fans who, in the past, have cosplayed everything from Batman and Darth Vader to Chacha Chaudhary and “Superkudi" (a female Indian spin on the Man of Steel), who wouldn’t hope?
