Kantha: Poetry Embroidered On Cloth

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is presenting an exhibition of the Kantha embroidery technique, popular in Bangladesh as well as West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha. Selected Kantha pieces from the IGNCA collection are on display, along with the history of the thread technique.

Annual Dastkari Haat Craft Bazaar
1-15 January
The 29th edition of the Annual Dastkari Haat Craft Bazaar will focus on handicrafts from Tibet, including traditional rugs, singing bowls, ritual objects and antiques. Some of the finest handicrafts from across India will also be on display. Folk singers from Kutch, Gujarat, Chhau dancers from Jharkhand, and traditional Tibetan dancers will perform. There will be a performance every day.

The Motley theatre group will pay tribute to satirist and short story writer Krishan Chander on his 100th birth anniversary, with Naseeruddin Shah, Danish Husain, Rakesh Om and Salim Arif reading from some of his work, including Gadhdhaa and Ek Gadhey Ki Aatmakatha.

Mharo Pranam: A Tribute To Shobhaji Gurtu

Vocalist Shubha Mudgal, flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and percussionist Trilok Gurtu will pay tribute to the late Padma Bhushan awardee Shobha Gurtu, who was known as the queen of thumri. She was one of the foremost Hindustani classical vocal exponents of her time.

This is an exhibition of selected drawings, objects and video works by German artist Rosemarie Trockel. Trockel is known for her machine-generated “knitted paintings"—knitted woollen material on a stretcher—in which she challenges traditional notions of painting and feminine roles in society, as well as art-making itself.
