Life in the city of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, revolves around the river Ganga—with pilgrims, tourists and locals alike having their lives touched by the river on a daily basis.

Some pilgrims come here to wash away their sins, and others come to seek piety and peace. The ghats, some of them packed with crowds, are a unique vantage point from which to look at the city.

This was why I chose to take a boat on the Ganga and look at the city from the river. This photo essay captures some of the sights I saw.

Varanasi is well-connected to most major cities in India by air, rail and road.

Hotel Surya on Mall Road is a comfortable and well-appointed place to stay (rooms start at around 2,000-2,500, per night, for double occupancy; There are numerous other options to suit all budgets.

Attend the ‘aarti puja’ on Dashashwamedh Ghat at sunset; and hire a boat (and a guide if you want a bit of history thrown in) to tour the city along the river.
