App radar: What to download this month

A new streaming service, photo editing tools, something to help small businesses and a few games to keep you and your smartphone busy

The past month didn’t see any big-name apps or game launches, but there was a steady stream of fun games and utility apps. Interestingly, most of them were free to download and use, while some offered optional in-app purchases to unlock more features. Here’s our pick, from the crowded ecosystem.

Microsoft Sprightly

Price: Free

Download from: Google Play Store

Microsoft’s new app is designed to help small-scale businesses, who use social networks to reach out to customers, by providing them with new templates that look a lot more organised and presentable than mere Facebook or Instagram posts. Users can create templates with the product image and price, along with a few lines on it. Once it is done, you can make some design changes in the layout like darkening the background for text, or shifting the product name on the top of the card and the rest of the details at the base. You can then save the image and share on social networks.

Photo ++

Price: Free

Download from: Google Play Store

This is a photo editing app with plenty of frames for your photos, PIPs (pictures inside pictures) and funky grids. You can pick any of the frames, add an image from the camera gallery or take a picture using the camera from the app itself. The wide range of options available here makes it a perfect pastime for social media buffs looking for fun and innovative ways of uploading images. You can also add text in different fonts. The grid feature allows users to make photo collages. Once you have added the images, you can alter which portion of the image you want to show, width of the frame and its colour, allowing greater personalisation.

Voot

Price: Free

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

Voot is a video on demand streaming service quite similar to Star India’s Hotstar app. It provides free access to all major Hindi movies and TV series without asking for a dime or monthly subscription. It has a nice collection of movies, which you can check easily by scrolling through the movie titles as per the genre or by simply entering the name in the search bar. Navigation is easy, while the interface is clean and free of ads. The app carries regional content from Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada and Marathi as well. Then there is a kid mode, which allows users to segregate content for children from adult content. It will restrict access to sections other than Voot Kids.

Real Boxing 2: Rocky

Price: Free (In app purchases 66 to 6,641)

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

A popular boxing game meets a popular boxing movie. Real Boxing 2: Rocky is inspired by the Sylvester Stallone-starrer boxing saga Rocky. The game allows you to create your own characters, give them a name, a look you want and the attire you want them in. The game follows a simple career mode with the option to improve your skills as a boxer in practice games. It’s a visually brilliant game with characters looking almost like their real-life counterparts. The bouts can be challenging as there are multiple swipe gestures for different actions and they are tricky to remember. If you are a boxing fan, there isn’t a better way of enjoying one of the best boxing movie characters but in a game fighting them.

Batman vs Superman Who will Win

Price: Free

Download from: Google Play Store, Apple App Store

It is no surprise that the official Batman vs Superman movie game is actually an endless runner genre game, and not an action game. You can run as Superman in the streets in daytime in Metropolis or as Batman at night in Gotham City. You also get to drive in the bar mobile car. The gameplay is very similar to the Subway Surfer but looks a lot more sophisticated and visually captivating. The characters run in the opposite direction of a busy road with a non-stop rush of cars and buses coming towards you. The actions are all swipe-based and similar to Subway Surfer.
