Beyond the iPad

Since the new iPad is going to take some time to reach the Indian market, we list some new Android tablets that make for an excellent alternative

Apple’s iPad announcement has been getting all the attention, and at the time of going to press, it is believed the new iPad and iPad mini will be available soon, with higher resolution displays (full HD displays for the iPad mini), better cameras (8 megapixel) and slimmer designs. Their innards get a boost in processor power, with perhaps the 64-bit architecture seen on the iPhone 5s, also arriving here soon.

If you’re looking for a new tablet that is not an iPad though (suppose you’re already on the Android ecosystem with your phone, or want a Windows machine because it’s familiar from your laptop and desktop, or you just don’t want an Apple product), then there are some new options.

We looked at six tablets that have either just been released or will soon be entering the Indian market and picked out the best options for you.

Best known for its graphic cards and mobile processors, NVIDIA Corp. surprised many when it unveiled a tablet with a stylus called the Tegra Note. NVIDIA, which has designed the tablet, will be selling it through partners like XOLO, who will work on branding, distribution and marketing in India. In terms of substance and performance, the Play Note has the wherewithal to take on Google’s Nexus range. A quad-core Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce graphics-processor gives it a lot of power. It also comes with front-facing speakers and a stylus. All of this makes the XOLO Play Tegra Note a device for those who really like their content in HD, be it games or videos, and prefer stock Android interface.

Launching next month, expected to be priced from 18,000-20,000*.
