Chinese martial art can be better than physiotherapy for knee joint pain
The ancient Chinese martial art form tai chi can reduce knee pain in people suffering from knee osteoarthritis, a study suggests. Osteoarthritis of the knees is one of the leading causes of pain and disability in adults. It is incurable but the pain can be controlled and mobility improved through physical therapy and medication. Researchers from Tufts Medical Centre randomly assigned 200 people with knee osteoarthritis to tai chi classes or physical therapy sessions for three months. Both groups reported similar reductions in pain at the end of the three months, but participants in the tai chi group reported greater improvement in well-being and mental health. The study was published in Annals of Internal medicine.

More physical activity can lower risk of several cancers
Moderate amount of physical activity can protect against a wide range of cancers, an international study claims. Researchers from National Cancer Institute examined 12 older studies involving a 1.44 million people and found that low amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity can lower risk of 26 types of cancer. The researchers point out that the study supports the fact that promoting physical activity can help in population-wide cancer prevention. The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Seasame can reduce oxidative stress
Seasame seed and sesame-based products can help reduce oxidative stress, a Brazilian study suggests. Researchers from Rio de Janeiro State University examined the published material on consumption of sesame-based ingredients and their impact on high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and type-2 diabetes. Their findings suggest that increased consumption of sesame reduces oxidative stress, particularly in people suffering from hypertension and type-2 diabetes. Oxidative stress is a condition which occurs due to imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to counter their harmful effects using antioxidants. The study was published in Journal of Medicinal Food.

Exercising is more effective than diet for fighting obesity
Physical exercise is more reliable than a controlled diet when it comes to preventing obesity, a US study claims. Researchers from the University of Missouri divided young rats prone to obesity into three different groups. The first and the second groups led a sedentary life while the third was allowed to exercise on a running wheel. The first and the third group were allowed unrestricted access to high fat diet while the second group was put on a controlled diet. After a few weeks, researchers measured the metabolism and physical activity of rats and found that sedentary rats with unlimited food access had become obese whereas sedentary rats on a controlled diet and rats that exercised were healthy.

Some mushrooms can help in depression
Magic mushrooms can become an effective form of medication for depression patients, a British study suggests. Mushrooms contain a compound called psilocybin which is also considered a psychedelic drug. Though psychedelic drugs can have side effects, no side effects were reported during the study. Researchers from Imperial College London enlisted six men and six women in the age group of 30 to 64 and put them on psilocybin capsules. They found a considerable decrease in symptoms of depression in all of them for three weeks. Seven continued to show a positive response after three months.
