From miniature paintings and Persian folklore to boho-luxe and frothy floral motifs, this year’s Amazon India Couture Week 2015 (29 July-2 August) bore testimony to the fact that beautiful excess is here to stay. We review the three collections that stood out.

‘The Sailing Bride’ by Monisha Jaising

It was cruise control at Monisha Jaising, whose collection, The Sailing Bride, had a dizzy mix of nuptial and nautical. The runway was transformed into a luxury yacht with models and chiselled sailors lounging on beach chairs to get into the swing of things. Jaising’s ideal brides are laid-back, and all about boho-luxe. Perhaps this explains why she sent out a model in a singlet worn over a lehnga and embellished sneakers (an instant hit). Fierce and fabulous, Jaising’s party-ready bride glided down the runway like bodacious Amazonian goddess with soft-tousled hair and dark lips. Her collection of sophisticated masterpieces in sportswear materials, metallic velvets, silk organza, jersey, tulle, chiffon and neoprene included panelled skirts, sensual pre-draped saris, and cigarette pants in lavender, ivory, gold, onyx, pink, sea blue and reds. But what didn’t really float the boat for us was when a certain type of cutwork-patterned gown, reminiscent of Atelier Versace’s Spring Summer 2015 couture collection, traipsed down the deck. A little word of caution here: Today’s Instagram-influenced brides are anything but lackadaisical when it comes to fashion.
