The infotainment system of Hyundai’s latest premium hatchback, the Elite i20, is its biggest upgrade. This is tied in with two separate elements—the information display in the instrument cluster and the steering-adaptive rear-parking camera integrated with the electro-chromic (non-reflective) rear-view mirror.

The blue text on the black background on the screen makes readability easier in bright sunlight, and also at night, compared with white or yellow colours. The vertical layout of the menu, rather than the traditional horizontal one, allows more information to be packed into one screen.

We hope that Hyundai provides a touch-screen system as standard spec with the next refresh, or even as an optional accessory for those who are interested. On-screen interface of a touch screen will reduce the physical buttons on the dashboard and even allow additional features such as video playback and GPS navigation.

For music playback, there are a plethora of sources—CD, USB, AUX-in, Bluetooth Audio and AM/FM Radio. Switching from one source to another is fairly quick and steering-mounted controls are convenient to use. There is a slight delay in the initial read time of a USB drive—it takes between 2-10 seconds, before playback starts. But this is largely dependent on the access speed and the capacity of individual drives. We tested the system with MP3 files of various bitrates, and the playback was smooth.

Bluetooth connectivity option is both a convenience and a safety feature. While we don’t recommend making or receiving calls while driving, the ability to stream calls through the car’s speakers eliminates the need to hold the phone to the ear, or fiddle with a headset. Pairing is a simple process, and all the phone’s contacts can be synced with the infotainment system’s memory.

The dashboard has been redesigned as well, and the layout is slightly angled towards the driver. This enhances usability and also reduces some bothersome reflections during daytime driving.

The Elite i20 continues the trend of being the geekiest premium hatchback in India. The current version will appeal to those who appreciate the neat safety aspects and the new features. There is scope for a lot more, but this is a solid foundation to build on. The prices start at around 4.9 lakh.
