Interpreting Tagore

13 February

Contemporary dancer and choreographer Astad Deboo will be joined by eight young dancers in his latest production, Interpreting Tagore. Of the four pieces based on Tagore’s song and poems, the first, Surrender, is striking for its many leg and arm extensions, bends and overall symmetry. In this physically demanding piece, the four dancers almost always have one leg in the air. The second piece, Your Grace, with its four 10ft-tall Devi puppets, made and controlled by the dancers, is a tribute to Goddess Kali. The third piece, Walking Tall, is based on the popular Tagore song Ekla cholo re. Deboo says Walking Tall was “autobiographical", inspired from his experiences in trying to reach out to two groups—Indian classical dancers (dressed in white and saffron) and corporate honchos (in black and silver), who help fund his projects.

Avni Doshi has curated an exhibition featuring Radhika Khimji, Tushar Joag, Chitra Ganesh, Nalini Malani, Sarnath Banerjee, Adip Dutta, Raghava K.K. and Tara Kelton. Doshi asks artists to apply this predicament to contemporary times, referencing our unceasing preoccupation with archiving personal information—from emails to photographs.

Someone Else

Till 16 February

In her current exhibition ‘Someone Else’, artist Shilpa Gupta builds her work with 100 books, each made of stainless steel, some of which are exact scaled replicas of the first editions of the titles. Each stamped, in generic font, with the reason given in retrospect by the author as to why he or she chose to take refuge in a false identity (pseudonym). What are amassed are a hundred confessions, each guided by a certain fear—of judgement, of persecution, of marginalization, of failure, of greater success. The exhibition also includes older works, such as ‘Singing Cloud’, an installation object built with thousands of microphones with 48 audio channels that play religious songs interspersed with a freedom song; and a wall of brick-like soaps imprinted with the word “THREAT", as well as some new works like the ‘Speaking Wall’, an interactive installation that examines the ideas of borders and separation.

11am-7pm (Sundays and Mondays closed). Chemould Prescott Road, Queen’s Mansion, Ghanashyam Talwalkar Marg, Fort (22000212).
