Looking forward to taking part in a marathon? Our pick of running shoes

Premium

January is the month of marathons and half marathons. Be it Mumbai, Mysuru, Thanjavuru, Bengaluru, Delhi, Rajkot or Coimbatore, the calendar is full of events that would delight professional runners as well as enthusiasts. But intentions are only the beginning; you need the best footwear to actually follow through on them. Here are some options that would work well not only for regular training and fitness routines, but also for the run itself.

Reebok ZJet Run Ghost

13,999

The ZJet Run Ghost shoe is inspired by a jet engine and has what is known as the Speed Channel moving air technology. The air in the Jetfuse pods on the sole moves with every heel-to-toe and toe-to- heel movement, giving an extra boost to the runner. Reebok has used the Nano Weave Adapt technology in the upper part, with a seamless design that doesn’t require any sewing. The four-way stretch mesh allows for a snug fit.

Nike Air Zoom Structure 19

11,795

This is the logical successor to the Air Zoom Elite 8 and builds on it in critical aspects. There is more cushioning under the forefoot, which makes the toe-heel transitions less stressful for the body. The outsole is a three-part design with different materials used at the front and back, as well as three distinct tread patterns. The shoe has excellent grip. The additional cushioning under the foot and the thicker material mean your foot sits a bit further away from the ground than a lot of other running shoes—and that is good for someone who doesn’t like the “sock-like" feeling some shoes offer. The Flymesh upper structure is rigid, yet comfortable.

Reebok CrossFit Nano Pump

14,999

A sibling of the ZPump Fusion, its upper zone is reinforced with Kevlar material, which means better protection for the foot. The tread design on the outsole has been redesigned as well for better grip across different running surfaces. The standout feature is the air-filled cage that wraps itself around the ankle and the mid-foot—there is a Pump button on the side of the shoe that you need to keep pushing till you are happy with the amount of inflation. It creates a sort of lock-in feel around the contours of the foot for a snug fit. The CrossFit Nano Pump doesn’t shout out with bright colours, but looks cool and classy.

Puma Ignite XT

8,999

Building on the excellent comfort and performance of the Ignite, the Ignite XT uses even finer material. As a result, the XT is even lighter and sits better around the foot. The one-piece upper part of the shoe allows a generous amount of ventilation, which works brilliantly in the heat. The moment you put your foot inside the Ignite XT, the softness of the foam used for the midsole is immediately noticeable. On the high abrasion-resistant rubber outsole, there are two separate elements that not only improve the grip during running, but also help in quick changes of direction. There are distinct flex grooves at the forefoot, while the “Transition Line" assists with grip—the same way car tyres work. This shoe works well for training, exercising and running.

adidas Duramo Elite

5,999

A lot of shoe companies use synthetic materials to make the mesh upper of the shoe, but adidas has used an air-mesh upper—a much softer material. This allows the foot a lot of breathability because there is a generous amount of ventilation, something we had seen in the Cosmic Boost series of shoes too. While this doesn’t exactly have a sock-like fit, runners will not find the shoe bulky or heavy. Cushioning under the foot is extremely good, and this shoe also uses the Adiprene material, which absorbs shocks usually felt by the heel—this can absorb impacts five times more than the person’s body weight. The Flex Groove outsole has a unique tread pattern that should do well during quick direction changes on moist surfaces too.
