A smartphone’s build quality, the quality of material used irrespective of whether it is metal or plastic and the placement of the keys are some critical elements which determine how good or bad a phone is to look at and in terms of ergonomics. The way things have shaped up over the past few months, affordable phones no longer look or feel drab or visually unappealing. Here are some devices that you must consider, on a strict budget.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime

Price: 8,999

The Redmi 3S Prime is a brilliantly designed smartphone with a unibody aluminium finish. The curves around the edges make it comfortable to hold. The phone measures 139mm in height and 69mm in width and tips the scales at 140g. For a phone with a 4,100mAh battery, this is pretty much unheard of. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the back panel where it is easily accessible. The Redmi 3S Prime runs Android 6.0 with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI 7. It is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor paired with 3GB RAM. It can handle heavy tasks comfortably, offers 32GB of internal storage and the battery lasts up to two days on single charge.

Panasonic Eluga Arc

Price: 9,789

The Eluga Arc gets its name because of its arched back design. The metallic finish feels good in the palm, while the compact (139mm in height and 67mm in width) and light form factor (130g) makes it ideal for users with clumsy hands. The fact that the screen supports two-way screen orientation in portrait mode means you can start using the phone from any side. Eluga Arc comes with a 4.7-inch display with 1280x720p resolution. It runs Android 5.1 and is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor with 2GB RAM. It is not a powerhouse but can handle most tasks well.

LG K10

Price: 11,274

LGK10 is perfectly sized for users looking for a big-screen phone without giving up on their comfort. It is 146mm tall and 74.8mm wide. The phone’s curved back design, the light form factor (140g) and the coarse finish on the back panel, which almost looks and feels like some sort of fabric, makes it one if the best-designed big-screen phones. The fact that there are no physical buttons on the side panel minimizes the chances of pressing any of the keys by mistake. The power, screen lock/unlock and volume buttons are placed on the back panel right where the index finger rests when you are holding the phone. LG K10 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and can handle multi-tasking and games well. It runs Android 5.0, has a 13-megapixel camera which works well in natural light and offers 16 GB storage.

Moto G 4 Plus

13,499 onwards

The trademark curved back is gone yet the new Moto G 4 Plus feels as comfortable to hold as its predecessors due to the coarse design on the back. The fact that the phone looks taller at 153mm, offers a bigger 5.5-inch display yet weighs 155g, as much as its small-screen predecessors, is quite a feat. The volume buttons are placed in the middle on the side panel, which makes adjusting volume easy. Equipped with a Qulacomm Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with 2GB RAM, the device can handle games and multi-tasking without any hiccups. It runs Android 6.0 with stock Android UI and is more likely to get the upcoming Android update sooner than any other budget smartphone. Its fingerprint sensor is placed at front.

Nextbit Robin

14,999

Nextbit Robin is one of the few smartphones which combines a good design with good looks by using a combination of unique eye-pooping colours. Despite its slab-like appearance and plasticky build, it feels handy and well-built. The other highlight is the light form factor (150g) and the sleek profile (7mm). It is 149mm tall and 72mm wide, which is impressive. Even Robin has a fingerprint sensor, which is uniquely placed on the side panel making it more accessible than front- or back-facing sensors. It runs on Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 80 hexa-core processor with 3GB RAM. It has 32GB storage and automatically moves the data of app which are not in use to cloud to free up storage on phone. The 5.2-inch display packs a resolution of 1920x1080p with Gorilla Glass 4.
