Five bands from New Delhi and Mumbai will compete at the blueFROG in Mumbai on Thursday for a chance to play on the popular TV musical show Coke Studio @ MTV.

This is the first time a relatively lesser-known music band will get a direct chance to play on the show, which has registered enormous success by staging performances by renowned artistes and bands such as Jalebee Cartel, La Pongal, Swanand Kirkire, Master Saleem, Shankar Tucker, Usha Uthup, Papon and Shilpa Rao, under the guidance of producers like Amit Trivedi, Clinton Cerejo, Karsh Kale, Nitin Sawhney, Hitesh Sonik and Ehsaan-Loy.

The “leapFROG to Coke Studio @ MTV" initiative aims to brings together the best up-and-coming indie bands on one platform. Over the last six weeks, it has featured 24 bands, which came together to create original music at gigs across New Delhi and Mumbai. The bands represented a confluence of diverse music genres, both vocal and instrumental, from traditional Eastern to modern Western, and from regional to folk. It’s now down to the five finalists, and the band that wins on Thursday will go on to play in Season 3 of Coke Studio @ MTV. The finale will be judged by musicians Amit Trivedi, Hitesh Sonik and Clinton Cejero.

The project, in association with blueFROG, was launched after the success of Season 2 of Coke Studio @ MTV, which showcased performances by 12 producers and more than 200 musicians.

Here are the contenders:

Winit Tikoo, Mumbai

A Kashmiri by birth, Tikoo’s compositions draw on the deep roots of the Sufi tradition of Jammu and Kashmir. His music, which features strains of blues, rock ’n roll, grunge and alternative, is accompanied by earthy poetry in Urdu. Tikoo, on vocals and guitar, is supported by Veljon Noronha on guitar, Pushkar Joshi on drums/ percussion and Aditya Kadam on bass.
