If you're willing to pay the price, there are some interesting ultrabook and keyboard options

Tired of the same old stuff electronics companies are pushing? Whether it’s ultrabooks or smartphones or tablets or even something like keyboards, most companies seem to be content to keep pushing out devices that look and work exactly like their competitor’s products, so that at times you need to look at the logo to know whose product it is.

If you’re looking for something that really stands out and is unique, then there are some great new options at the upper end of the market that do offer great features. They’re not for everyone, but they definitely live up to their high price tags.

The brushed aluminium unibody finish gives it a premium look and feel that is matched only by the Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks. The keyboard deck and the underside are very well put together.

However, the quality of the finish doesn’t follow through completely to the lid, which has a bit too much glass because of the two displays. The hinge is quite taut, but you cannot risk applying too much pressure anywhere on the lid.

The dual display is quite neat. Once you have the Asus Utilities set up, you can set the display mode to one or both the 11.6-inch screens. The full HD resolution does make the text too small in desktop mode, but setting it to 125% makes it readable.

A by-product of this resolution is very crisp text. Asus has mastered the art of packing in excellent keyboards in small spaces, as it showed with the VivoBook. The keys on the Taichi are well-spaced, with adequate travel allowing for quick typing.

The battery will last 4.5 hours with ease, with the brightness set at 60%. You do pay a lot of money for the Taichi, but this machine blends flair with function, with aplomb.

Corsair Vengeance K70

We reviewed the Corsair Vengeance K90 previously and were smitten by its design and features. Since the K90 was primarily meant for massively multiplayer online (MMO) gamers who play games like World of Warcraft, with its slew of G-keys and profiles, the Vengeance K70 is built keeping first-person shooter (FPS) gamers in mind.

The K70 shines when it comes to build quality—it has a brushed aluminium top with a sturdy build—so it may last a long time. We especially liked the backlighting of the K70; it has individual LEDs for each key to provide uniform illumination across the keyboard.

The K70 has a button to change the brightness of the backlight and you can also illuminate individual keys depending on your preferences. The K70 has a reactive backlighting option which illuminates particular keys as you press them.

Since the K70 uses Cherry MX Red mechanical switches with 45g actuation force, the keys provide good response and feedback.

A soft-layered, detachable wrist-rest has also been included. The K70, a feature-rich gaming keyboard, is very expensive and caters to a niche audience with deep pockets. You won’t regret buying it though.
