The Vagina Monologues

An adaptation of Eve Ensler’s iconic play, directed by Avrina Joslin, will be staged by The Root Woot Company. The Vagina Monologues is a collection of monologues revolving around one essential subject—the vagina. There are monologues on female genital mutilation, sexual liberation, sexual abuse, exploration, etc. 1 hour, 30 minutes.

Looking Inwards, Looking Beyond

Mixed-media artist Santhosh Kotagiri and sculptor Vasantharaja J. are displaying their recent works. Kotagiri, a Hyderabad-based artist, is known for his surrealistic approach and his extensive use of gold and silver foil with monochromatic colour palettes. Chennai-based Raja’s bronze sculptures, which feature intricate lines and varied textures, are an attempt to depict the feelings that arise when people engage with nature.

Ideas of the Sublime

A sprawling exhibition that brings together four generations of Indian artists, Ideas of the Sublime celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Vadehra Art Gallery. Curator Gayatri Sinha has tried to incorporate Vadehra’s history over the last quarter-century, including the works of artists like Arpita Singh, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Rameshwar Broota and Vivan Sundaram, who have all been associated with the gallery. Among the 17 artists’ works on exhibit, young winners of the Vadehra-backed Fica (Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art) Award, like Paribartana Mohanty and Gipin Varghese, will also be showcasing their works.

The Ishara International Puppet Festival
8-16 April
Since its inception in 2001, the Ishara festival has brought some of the best puppet theatre from around the world to Delhi and to the Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh. This time, the countries taking part include Russia, Israel, Iran, Portugal, Bulgaria and Italy.
The 10 performances will encompass a variety of puppetry styles. The plays that will be staged include Garbage for Plums, on 9 April. It is based on a traditional Bulgarian fairy tale about a man’s quirky quest to find a caring wife for himself. The Cubes Circus, on 11 April, is inspired by Bauhaus dance theatre and the popular children’s book Tsafuf. This mime performance from Israel combines modern puppetry, sculpture and dance theatre. A Musician Who Played the Moon from Iran, on 11 April, is a musical retelling of the story of the Russian folk legend Sadko. Ravan Chhaya, on 15 April, will bring Orissa’s shadow puppet theatre to the stage, retelling the Ramayan, with text from 18th century Odia poet Biswanath Khuntia’s Bichitra Ramayan.

Azamgarh Festival 2013

Arts and crafts traditions from three villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district—Hariharpur (with a heritage of music), Mubarakpur (a weavers’ village) and Nizamabad (famous for its black pottery with engraved silver patterns)—are on display. The festival has been organized by the Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development. There are also live demonstrations by master weavers on the making of Banarasi saris and by potters on the creation of black pottery. There is also Dhobiya Nritya; Purabang Gayeki; Taal Yatra (an ensemble of nine tablas); and a ‘thumri-dadra-kajri’ recital.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi National Festival of Music and Dance
5-7 April
On Friday, the first day of the festival, sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee will perform a jugalbandi with flautist Shashank Subramanyam. This will be followed by a performance by Hindustani classical vocalist Begum Parveen Sultana. On Saturday, Shalu Jindal will perform Kuchipudi, followed by a sitar recital by Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee. On Sunday, Shobana will perform Bharatanatyam. This will be followed by a felicitation of flautist Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, and a flute rendition by the master and his nephew, Rakesh Chaurasia.

Heritage and Restoration in Post-WWII Germany

Anuradha Reddy, an expert in restoration and heritage who has worked for several years in Germany, will deliver a terrace lecture on heritage and restoration in post-World War II Germany—the diverse history and influences on architecture. Reddy is also the convenor of the Greater Hyderabad chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach).
