Internationally, it’s a best-selling colour, though Indian women are still shy when it comes to red lipsticks. But there’s no time like the party season to let go of inhibitions. Hit the make-up counters to find your shade of red. And once you have the shade you like, follow advice from experts on the best way to paint the town red.
Susan Sterling, make-up artist for Chanel, says red signifies femininity, strength and a touch of audacity. She says the key to finding the right red for your skin tone lies in testing the colour directly on the lips to discover the perfect shade.

There’s a right way to apply red lipstick: “Get perfect red lips by defining the shape of the lips with a lip pencil, fill in the entire lip area, then apply the lipstick over that with a lip brush—it’s precise and helps control the application of colour," says Sterling. Though Joshi says pinky-nudes are top-sellers in India, she urges you to try out a red. “It brings out the olive in your skintone and makes teeth and skin look brighter," says Joshi.
To get a step closer, start out with nuances of plums and deep shades of berry, that have a touch of gold iridescence in them; the warmth of the gold enhances the skin’s tone, says Sterling.

Try YSL’s gloss-like vibrant lipsticks—Coral Harmony and Red Crystal (Rs1,220 each). Chanel’s Rubis Siam (Rs1,500) from the Rouge Allure range, has a silky texture that glides on, while MAC’s Russian Red (Rs920) is a reddest-of-the-red lipstick, which is a top-selling shade. Lakme’s Autumn/ Winter collection has new shades of red lipstick (Rs175) and Lip Lacquer (Rs275), while the Maybelline counter is where you’ll find a range of red shades in the Moisture Extreme lipsticks (Rs179). Maybelline’s new line of glosses Shine Seduction (Rs289) also has a red gloss. Also try L’Oreal’s Color Riche Star Secrets Penelope Red (Rs560), or Glam Shine Cream (Rs560).
Chanel’s Christmas 2007 make-up collection
If you want winter make-up that will give you a break from deep colours, hit the Chanel counter. Shimmer, subtle sparkle and iridescence light up shades of pinks, peaches and whites. Dust the Poudre Universelle Libre, a lightweight loose powder over your face and collarbone for a subtle radiance. Lips get a peachy coat, while nails are pale pink with hints of glimmer.

YSL’s end-of-year make-up collection uses one of the Parisian design house’s favourite symbols—the heart locket and transforms it into a limited edition lip palette, complete with a mirror and a cleverly concealed lip brush. The white gold-coloured heart, set with crystals, can be worn around the neck or attached to a belt or handbag. There are also festive shades of blush, lipstick, gloss, eye shadow shades, as well as two new shades of every beauty junkie’s favourite highlighter, Touche Éclat.

The Body Shop’s collection of Christmas goodies includes a new range of products in a fragrance called Rich Plum.
