The popular ‘Music in the Park’ series restarts with a recital by mandolin player U. Srinivas. Gayathri Fine Arts

New Delhi-based organization Gayathri Fine Arts has been furthering the cause of the Carnatic tradition in the Capital for many years. It is holding a concert featuring performances by young artistes, including vocal recitals by P. Sreenivas, G. Sowmya, Vasundhara Srinivas and Swati Bhatt; veena recital by V. Veena, and flute recital by V. Janani. The musicians will be accompanied by R. Saravanan and N. Arvind on the violin; V. Shankar Raman, T.S. Shriram, K. Srikant, N.C. Sudarshan and B. Banaras exponent Prasanna is equally well-versed with the flute and the ‘shehnai’. The event is part of Spic Macay’s Virasat 2007. A classically trained cellist, Rao-de Haas adapted her instrument to create the ‘sitar-cello’. This former student of Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia has since moved from Amsterdam to India and often performs with husband, sitarist Shubhendra Rao. This event is part of Virasat 2007. 10am. According to Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Chakrabarty is one of the few classical musicians who will make a mark on the 21st century. Need we say more about the young hope for vocal music in India. Each year, the Ramanujan School of Mathematics in Patna selects 30 young students and prepares them for entry to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Most are from low-caste backgrounds; all have a talent for mathematics. Director Christopher Mitchell followed this year’s ‘Super 30’ from their initial selection in September 2006 to the moment they got their IIT results in May. With Tom Schulman’s script scrutinizing educational conformity, the casting of Robin Williams as English teacher John Keating is inspired. In this Peter Weir-directed film, Keating’s eccentric teaching methods promote spontaneity and idealism. But in the prestigious Welton Academy circa 1959, these male offspring are put on the same career paths as their fathers, and face stern opposition from the educational establishment when they choose to indulge their imaginations. 3.30pm. Sudhir Patwardhan’s works are a collection of images showing the everyday lives in Mumbai’s streets. Mehta’s sublime ode to female empowerment, set in pre-independent India, is shot in the colours of Indian spices. A lecherous collector (Naseeruddin Shah) starts making the moves on Sonbai (Smita Patil), a married peasant woman whose husband has migrated to the city for work. When she slaps him publicly, he starts hunting her down like an animal and she rushes into a spice factory to take shelter. This was Ketan Mehta’s last brilliant film, an art house venture that’s as entertaining as any mainstream film. The cinematography and pacing are gripping and the performances are brilliant—Shah’s malicious buffoon act is second only to Patil’s strong and sensuous Sonbai. 6.30pm (duration: 2 hours 8 minutes).

Tendulkar and Violence
27 November
The NCPA’s Mohile Parikh Center for the Contemporary organizes a screening of Atul Pethe’s well-travelled documentary on the role of violence in Vijay Tendulkar’s plays. Tendulkar’s fascination with violence is directly proportionate to the audience’s fascination with the Marathi playwright. The plays that Tendulkar wrote in the 1970s and 1980s, among them ‘Gidhade’ (Vultures), ‘Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe’, ‘Ghashiram Kotwal’ and ‘Sakharam Binder’, dragged violence out of the home and on to the stage, and stuck Tendulkar with an enfant terrible reputation that shadows attempts to critically view his work. This documentary, written and directed by Makarand Sathe and directed by Pethe, corrects the balance and is a measured, serious attempt to discuss Tendulkar’s engagement with violence. 6pm. Four choral groups—the Salvation Singers (conducted by Dylan D’Souza), the Victory Chorus Line (conducted by Karen Vaswani), the Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble (conducted by Alfred D’Souza) and the Chennai-based Harmonics—come together along with a host of popular singers such as Ella and Shahariyar Atai, Asif Ali Baig, Kim Cardoz, Marianne D’Cruz and Marie Paul, to perform a mix of religious, gospel and popular music at a concert organized to raise funds for the preservation of the All Saints Church in Malabar Hill. 7pm. Record label-owner Ranjeet and his equally wealthy friends have a cruel way of entertaining themselves. They invite for dinner an “idiot", or an enthusiastic simpleton with a peculiar talent, and have the person perform for their amusement. Ranjeet thinks he’s met the perfect idiot when he hears of Bharat Bhushan, a Hindi movie song-spouting employee of the Income Tax department. Ranjeet has actually met his match, since Bhushan is a pro at irritating people even though he doesn’t know it. 7pm onwards. Bandstand amphitheatre. Free.

American author Nalini Jones reads from her debut collection of short stories, ‘What You Call Winter’, set in the imaginary neighbourhood of Santa Clara. If you think that Santa Clara seems a lot like Bandra, you wouldn’t be wrong. That’s where Jones’ grandparents live and where she spent some of her vacations. A selection of art films from the Cologne KunstFilmBiennale 2005 international programme will be screened in rotation.
