Titoni: Frequently Asked Questions
What is Titoni?
Titoni is an independent, family-owned Swiss watch brand based in Grenchen, near the foot of the Jura mountains. This is an area that has a rich heritage and history of watchmaking in Switzerland.
Oh? Is it a new company?
Au contraire. Titoni has been around since 1919 when founder Fritz Schluep first established a watch workshop with three employees and big dreams. The staff grew five-fold in just a year and Titoni immediately began looking overseas for markets in Germany, America and Japan. Schluep initially began making watches under the Felca brand name. The Titoni name came much later, in 1952.
What kind of watches does it make?
Felca, as it was known in the early days, made watches that married contemporary design with traditional Swiss watchmaking codes and approaches. So the earliest Felca watches display Art Nouveau and inspirations from the Modernist movements. But through the years, the company also focused on making solid, dependable watches. So much so, that by the end of the World War II, the US army placed an order with Felca for 30,000 watches, a landmark in the company’s history.
When did the brand Titoni come about?
That happened when Bruno Schluep, the second generation, entered into what would become a long and very successful association with markets in the Middle and Far East. This happened shortly after World War II. Titoni would establish a foothold in the Chinese market that has served it well ever since.
Was it present in India?
From its earliest days, Titoni has a presence in India. In the 1950s, it even had a watch model called the Maharajah.
Interesting. So what kind of watches does Titoni make today?
Titoni, still one of those rare family-owned Swiss brands, today makes Swiss watches, assembled in-house, to very high standards. The watches in the Master collection, for instance, are all manufactured to COSC standards, that certify the watches as chronometers. There are several other collections for men and women such as the Seascoper diver watches, the elegant Airmaster, or the sporty Jetstream.
Would you pick out any in particular?
Thank you for asking. We particularly like the men’s Slenderline (in photo) piece on the leather bracelet. A wonderful, elegant, timeless wristwatch. We also like the Mademoiselle By Titoni collection for women, which features several models in a combination of colours and materials.
