Fuji, the 110-seater Japanese restaurant in the middle lane of M-block, Connaught Place, is a great place to drop in for an early working lunch.

A cheery “irasshaimase" greeted me. On the way to my booth near the open sushi and teppanyaki kitchen, I passed two tables of Japanese lunchers, which seemed like an endorsement of the food’s authenticity. The tables were well appointed with origami-fold cloth napkins and the usual chopsticks with soya condiment.

The menu is systematically presented by course—appetizers, salads, sushi, teppanyaki, yakitori, hot-pots. The mains are listed according to the style of cooking: Itamemono (stir-fried), Mushimono (steamed), Tempura (deep-fried), Agemono (deep-fried with batter) and Yakimono (grilled).

We were served bottomless cups of Ocha (Japanese green tea), which wasn’t quite as hot as we would have liked, but delicious all the same.

The good

We started with Hourensou Goma ae ( 200), which is spinach with sesame seeds. The sesame was ground into a paste and flavoured with just the right amount of sweet. With a slight nutty flavour, I couldn’t taste the bitterness of the spinach and that made this Goma ae perfect.

The Chasyu Tonkotsu ( 650), a hearty bowl of ramen, was large enough for two or even three people, and came with roast pork belly slices, spinach and nori leaves, egg, narito maki (fish cake) and sweet corn swimming in a stock made from pork bone and fat. It was served with a spicy shichimi pepper, a Japanese seven-spice pepper, which I used liberally on my ramen.

The Kolkata Roll ( 450), a sushi roll made with deep-fried tiger prawn glazed with teriyaki sauce, was my lunch companion’s favourite. The tempura glazing made this roll stand out, taste-wise.

The not-so-good

We tried the Ume Kyu Temaki ( 200) and the Spicy Tuna Temaki ( 400), largish cornetto-shaped, hand-rolled sushi with a maki wrap around the cone. I ordered the Ume Kyu because I love the sharp taste of plum but I hardly got any. While uniquely presented on lovely stands, the temaki were too cumbersome to eat and the maki wrap flavour overwhelmed the roll. We could barely feel the hit of the Ume or the spice from the tuna. If you do try it, order only one per person because they are large.

We tried the Mushi Tori Gyoza, or steamed chicken dumplings ( 250). The basket had four pieces of chicken mince mixed with vegetable, soy and chives. They looked pretty enough, but it was an awkward moment when the wrappers fell away from the dense and tasteless mince mix.

We hoped for dessert, but they only have fresh seasonal fruit as dessert. My lunch companion wanted coffee but they didn’t have any coffee either.

The staff is not well informed about the menu and I don’t blame them. The menu is large and dense. We had to call the manager.

Talk plastic

The fixed lunches, priced at 500-1,000, are a perfect portion size for a light lunch (nine non-vegetarian options and three vegetarian options). Our bill for two came to 3,532.
