Inspired by tapestry work based on the art of masters like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, S.G. Vasudev has been working with master weaver Subbarayalu since 1995 to translate his own paintings into tapestries. The exhibition of tapestries in silk will present images from Vasudev’s paintings, including Tree Of Life, Maithuna, Humanscape, Earthscapes and Theatre Of Life.

Writer Badal Sircar’s Baki Itihaas tells the story of Sharad and his wife Vasanti. When the couple hears that an acquaintance has committed suicide, their speculation on the reasons sets the stage for a dramatic investigation into the contradictions in their own lives. The play explores the individual’s role in history, questioning whether we can escape the burden of the past.

Abeer Gupta and Suchitra Balasubrahmanyan, professors at the School of Design at Delhi’s Ambedkar University, had received a one-year grant from the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in 2014 to engage with the decorative arts department at the National Museum and restage its collection of brocade saris. The resulting exhibition, co-curated by them with the National Museum’s Anamika Pathak, has at its core a notable collection of saris from Varanasi—richly patterned silks embellished with gold and silver threads. The exhibits explore the sari as a cultural artefact as well as a textile for personal adornment.
