A woman’s purse is flaunted with panache. It becomes a conversation starter. A man’s wallet, on the other hand, is flung around, everywhere. It lacks personality.

“The phrase ‘statement wallet’ can exist. Men are becoming more aware and want something sleeker even in accessories like wallets. Moreover, since a lot of men do not carry cash, wallets are no longer a padded extension of the rear," says Delhi-based Karan Berry of AKA Bespoke, a customized accessories label that focuses on minimally designed travel wallets, shoes and bags. A “statement wallet" is a good idea because good-quality wallets are long-lasting, believes Prabha S., a buyer for men’s accessories and apparel at The Collective, an international multi-brand chain. For formal wear, she says, you could invest in variations of colour, texture, constructional elements and branding—shades of black, navy and brown; varieties of textured leather; contrasting or printed linings; and subtle branding via a small logo on the edge or name embossing. “But branding should be minimal," she says.

Berry uses an engineered, technology-driven wallet from the international brand Secrid. “It is a metal (ultra-thin aluminium) and leather wallet, which has a lever. When pressed down, (it) ejects cash and cards as per your convenience," he says.

Besides fine leather, Berry suggests investing in technology-driven wallets. Like the code-encrypted wallet, which works like a miniature safe, the solar charger wallet that can recharge your phone, the radio frequency-identification blocking technology metal wallet, or the GPS-enabled wallet. These are available at online portals like Flipkart and Amazon, and at high-end, multi-brand accessories’ stores.

Prabha suggests keeping the currency size in mind while choosing the wallet.
