Indiscriminate use of antibiotic can make medicines ineffective

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned against indiscriminate use of antibiotics as it leads to resistance to medicines and treatment failure. It has asked India and South East Asian nations to urgently address the issue. It also said that increased awareness needs to be created among the general public as well as health workers and pharmacists on taking and selling only prescribed medicines. According to Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO’s regional director, South-East Asia Region, “Common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades may once again kill millions. Resistance to antibiotics will make complex surgeries and management of several chronic illnesses like cancer extremely difficult." Read more here.

Protein found in apples and green tomatoes can help old

Scientists at University of Iowa have discovered two natural compounds that cause muscle weakness and loss during ageing. The team identified Ursolic acid, which is found in apple peel, and Tomatidine, found in green tomatoes, as small molecules that can prevent acute muscle wasting caused by starvation and inactivity. The protein called ATF4 alters gene expression in skeletal muscle, causing reduction of muscle protein synthesis, strength and mass.“Ursolic acid and Tomatidine appear to have a lot of potential as tools for dealing with muscle weakness and atrophy during ageing," said Christopher Adams, professor of internal medicine and senior study author. E-cigarettes may lead to teen smoking

Youngsters who smoke electronic cigarettes are more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes within a year, according to a new study which suggests that e-cigarettes may act like a pathway to smoking. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine more slowly than traditional cigarettes, allowing a new user to advance to cigarette smoking as they become tolerant to nicotine’s side-effects, the researchers said. Speaking on the issue, Brian Primack, director of University of Pittsburgh Centre for Research on Media, Technology and Health, said, “E-cigarettes are not subject to many laws that regulate traditional cigarettes, such as age limits on sales, taxation and labelling requirements." E-cigarettes are not subject to the same regulations as traditional cigarettes. Read more here.

Obese men at lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis

A high body mass index (BMI) could reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in men, but not in women, according to a Department of Rheumatology, Malmö University Hospital in Sweden. Researchers at the hospital analysed data from 383 patients, taken from two population-based health surveys with a total of 50,705 participants, to discover that there is a strong association between high BMI in men and lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. However, this association was not found in women. Researchers suggest, it is the kind of fat development in men with high body mass index (BMI) that protects them against rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This is because men with high BMI, compared with women, develop more abdominal obesity, or visceral fat. The results were based on the Malmo Diet Cancer Study (MCDS) and Malmo Preventative Medicine Programme (MPMP) data sets.

A 9-5 job makes you sleep deprived

Do you struggle to wake up every morning to report yourself to work? It could be because you should have never been up too early in the first place. One of the leading doctors of Oxford University, Dr. Paul Kelley, argues that working people should not report earlier than 10:00 am, or both the business and the workers run the risk of poor performance. The main reason has something to do with the circadian rhythm, every person’s natural body clock. It affects not only the sleep-wake cycle but also the various metabolic processes in the body. This may explain why people who are deprived of sleep are prone to hormonal imbalances and obesity. They also struggle losing the extra weight. Read more here
