MTV Video Music Award nominations: The year of Beyonce

This year, the VMAs have a new category, and awards sweetheart Taylor Swift gets a VMA snub

On Tuesday, the Video Music Award (VMA) nominations were announced, and 2016 is shaping up to be the year of Beyoncé. After her album Lemonade had four Emmy nominations, Queen Bey has now been nominated for 11 VMAs. Adele comes a close second, with eight nominations including seven just for her chart-topping track Hello.

This year also marks the beginning of a new category in the VMAs—breakthrough long-form video. The nominees in that category include Beyoncé for Lemonade, Justin Bieber for PURPOSE: The Movement, Florence + The Machine for The Odyssey, YouTube star Troye Sivan for Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy and Chris Brown for Royalty. The best new artist category has Zara Larsson, Lukas Graham, Bryson Tiller, DNCE and Desiigner fighting it out.

This year’s video of the year award has Beyoncé (for Formation) and Adele (for Hello) going up against Bieber’s Sorry, Drake’s Hotline Bling and Kanye West’s controversial video Famous.

Late singer David Bowie, who passed away earlier this year in January, has received four posthumous nominations: best art direction for the video of Blackstar, and best direction, cinematography and editing for the video of Lazarus.

The current pop phenomenon Taylor Swift, nominated for 10 awards last year, has received none at the 2016 edition of the awards. Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and Grammy-award winner Meghan Trainor have all been similarly snubbed, despite having had a good year otherwise.

This year also marks the first time the VMAs will be held at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The awards ceremony will take place on 28 August.

The best male video contenders:

Drake for Hotline Bling

Bryson Tiller for Don’t

Calvin Harris (feat.) Rihanna for This is What You Came for

Kanye West for Famous

The Weeknd for Can’t Feel My Face

The best female video nominees:

Adele for Hello

Beyoncé for Hold Up

Sia for Cheap Thrills

Ariana Grande for Into You

Rihanna (feat.) Drake for Work
