App Radar: New apps for your iPhone and Android phones
The latest on the app store for your phone includes social networking apps, a unique football game and something that makes notification a bit different
May has been a busy month for app stores. While Google rolled out a new group communication app and showed off a few intelligent messaging app concepts, a lot more was happening in the apps ecosystem. The futuristic runner game Vector’s sequel was finally rolled out and Notifly has added a bit more colour and intelligence in the way you access your messaging notifications. Here are some more examples.
Price: Free
Available on Android, iOS
A social network with a huge following, Reddit’s interface looks pretty archaic, like a web page from the ’90s. The new mobile app changes it with a beautiful layout that almost looks like any other social network. Though a lot of work is still needed, for a Reddit user it is a lot better than any of the Reddit clients that are infested with too many ads. The homepage allows you to customise the home page by switching between the large image option, where you can see an image, and no image option, where you can see posts but no images. Also, Reddit’s Askme Anything app which was pulled out from the app stores a few months ago is not incorporated within this new app along with numerous categories it is known for.
Notifly
Price: Free, upgrade Rs70
Available on Android, iOS
The notifications window is an area where most phone makers have a lot of work to do. Most show messenger notifications and other notifications together in a list-based format. The new Notifly app not just makes your messenger notifications more colourful, but also saves you the task of dragging down the notifications and checking them one by one. It shows all notifications in colourful bubbles. You can preset the colours of the bubble so you can identify the app from where the notification has come. Tap on the bubble and you can read the notification right there. If it is a messenger-related notification, you can reply from the notification slide itself. It supports all major social networks and messenger apps.
Yammo
Price: Free
Available on Android, iOS
If you are looking for a new photo editing tool with lots of fun filters, try Yammo. You can use an image from your phone’s image gallery and add text, drawing or an imoji on it. What makes it fun is the amount of options for editing your photos. You can shrink or expand the objects or people in the image. You can add text on it in multiple fonts and in any colour format you like with the apps in-built colour creator tools. You can share the edited images on any of the social networks from the app itself.
Stickman Soccer 16
Price: Free
Available on Android, iOS
Sequel to the award winning Stickman Soccer 2014, the new game offers a lot more game modes and tournaments. While the graphics still look the same with black stickman-based characters, the game play has improved. Now you can control players manually, and vary the difficulty accordingly. The matches can span four minutes to 16 minutes. The only catch is that you can’t tell which player is yours while playing the game as all players—even the opponents—look the same. What still makes it a must download is the challenging gameplay, the multiple game modes and the small game size—the game takes up less than 100MB after installation and it works offline.
Vector 2
Price: Free
Available on Android, iOS
Vector 2 is not a major graphical overhaul over its predecessor, but offers a more challenging gameplay. It gets tougher as the free runner faces more obstacles in his path. However, the game allows users to equip the free runner with protective gear which can act as a one-time boost or life saver. The gear shows up automatically as you progress in the game. The central themes are still the same—the forerunner is trying to escape the totalitarian system he is trapped into. He can run, slide, jump and perform a lot more parkour stunts which is what sets the game apart from other runner games.
OneTap Tennis
Price: Free
Available on Android, iOS
OneTap tennis is a unique tennis game which doesn’t feature the real-life tennis format. Instead it is a multiplayer game with objective-based challenges. The games are shorter than you can imagine, but require immense patience. One can slide to give shots a direction but to get the timing right one has to wait for the ball to hit the yellow orange meter. The graphics are block-based like Crissy Road so don’t expect anything on the lines of Virtua tennis. It is more of a fun game for fans who don’t have the time for a full tennis game.
