NEW DELHI :

Whatever it is, it seems to be spreading like an epidemic and is fast becoming everybody’s favourite condition to blame their weight gain on!" Fitness professional Rujuta Diwekar is referring to PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), two terms that are used interchangeably. In her new book, The PCOD-Thyroid Book—Four Strategies To Counter PCOD And Hypothyroid: Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep & Relationships, Diwekar explains PCOD/PCOS and thyroid in both layman and scientific terms, and offers lifestyle solutions.

In the chapter, “PCOD/PCOS", Diwekar points out some “events" that increase one’s susceptibility to it. Edited excerpts:

PCOD and PCOS are like same-same but different. PCOD means that your ovaries are reeling under pressure and feeling the brunt of the disturbances in your body and generally not functioning at their peak efficiency. PCOS means that these disturbances are now no longer just in the ovaries but are also manifesting in other parts of the body—as acne and body hair, to put the mildest first. “Syndrome" is actually like a set or “package" of symptoms that you get with the “curse": irregular periods, obesity, insulin insensitivity, high amounts of “male hormones", irritability, high blood pressure, difficulty in conceiving, oily skin, thinning hair, to name a few...

There are some things that I would like to put down:

u Our body and mind, more specifically, their well-being (or lack of it) affects our hormones.

u Our hormones, in turn, affect the well-being of our mind and body.

u Since PCOS is a hormonal condition, you are up against a vicious cycle and it is normal to feel frustrated.

u Having said that, being frustrated doesn’t help...

u Nobody knows the exact cause of PCOS; it is largely agreed, though, that dropping body fat helps the ovaries function better and therefore overcome PCOS.

u On this premise I shall say that I am sceptical about conventional ways of “treating" PCOS: contraceptives with or without an anti-diabetic drug and with or without a diuretic or anti-androgen drugs.

u Overriding the ovaries or trying to bring about a “hormonal balance" by using golis has many issues, not the least of which is the side effects of these drugs...

According to me, there are “events" which increase one’s susceptibility to PCOS. These are:

u Hostel food, or the fact that you spend all your pocket money on “coffee shops and fast food" even if you live at home. Exercise? No. You are in college now, you can’t run around in your compound any more and all gyms/workout places are too far of or too expensive.

u Staying away from home to work. So you may have your own apartment or share it with roomies, but what you don’t have is a functional kitchen. So office canteen and instant pizza it is...

The main challenge here is that we are increasingly living in situations where eating wholesome food in peace and exercising is a distant dream, but where the pressures to look thin are more than ever....

Before we go further, know that effortless and regular periods are a natural consequence of optimum body fat, health and fitness levels (it means all hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters, organs like ovaries, liver, etc., are keeping good health)...

All-in-all, be a no-fuss girl and eat good food to help your body feel fresh, light and energetic. The hormones will respond by dancing freely and in perfect harmony.
