Review: Amkette Trubeats Tango headphone

It takes two to tango

The Tango has square ear cups, rather than the conventional circular ones that most headphones have.

Amkette isn’t really the first brand that comes to mind if you are looking to buy an audio accessory—earphones or headphones. But there’s a consistency to its audio products. The latest headphone from their line-up, the Trubeats Tango, is a prime example.

The colour options are basic—black, white and blue—and all three ship with a set of four easily swappable decal covers, which have rather colourful patterns.

The Tango has square ear cups, rather than the conventional circular ones that most headphones have. These are height-adjustable, with the slider mechanism attached to the headband. The band and ear cups have a soft leather material, which feels cushy. These are on-ear headphones, which means the ears may start feeling some pressure and stress after an hour or so of listening—at least this happened to us during tests. The plastic build means these headphones are lightweight, but they don’t seem to be designed to take rough use.

The primary cable is attached to the headphones at the left ear cup. This cable has a 3.5mm jack at the other end, used to connect to a phone, MP3 player, iPod, tablet or laptop. More interestingly, the right ear cup has a 3.5mm input jack. Amkette calls this the sharing port. Simply put, you can connect another headphone/earphone to the Tango, and two people can listen to the same audio source. We tested with a JBL earphone, a Sennheiser earphone and a Sony headphone, and all three were compatible with the sharing port. There is a slight reduction in the volume levels of the primary headphone, but the quality seemed to be the same on both sets. Given the convenience, it’s a minor trade-off.

The audio quality was surprisingly good. The drivers are able to handle a variety of music genres with the kind of ease that most other similarly priced headphones can only dream of. There is adequate bass throughout, but it’s never overpowering. For most music, the Tango works best at 50-60% volume, with a lot of clarity. At around 80% of the volume, the sound quality holds up rather well. But even a slight increase in volume levels from this point will introduce a slight distortion and the audio signature will lean heavily towards vocals, which is just uncomfortable on the ears.

What makes the Tango good for a variety of music is the handling of the mid-range and higher frequencies; it doesn’t sound unnaturally loud or sharp. The key is that it ties in well with the bass, while retaining its identity and a wide sound stage. But, there are limitations to the richness you will get from the sound—all the basic elements are taken care of, but finer details in a track don’t always get heard.

At 1,495, the Amkette Trubeats Tango offers value. It is light, can be carried around easily, and a second headphone can be tethered to it. Above all, we would recommend it for the good sound quality.
