New Delhi: The Opera Mini mobile browser made it easier to browse the web on sluggish mobile networks and broadband connections. The latest update of the app, now rolling out for users in India (called Opera Mini 23), adds significant performance improvements, app-like functionality on browser and subtle design overhauls that can make navigation easier for users.

New shortcut icons

Opera has added some animated shortcut icons in the browser. So while a page is opening, you can see a red thunder icon at the top while the page is loading. This icon switches to a circular blue icon when the page is opened. By tapping on it you can see how much of data you have saved on that webpage with Opera Mini. Earlier, you could only see the total amount of data saved in the app menu. Similarly, when you are watching a video on Opera Mini, another blue coloured icon will appear at the top, to indicate which videos can be downloaded.

Facebook tools in browser

This new tool is meant for users who like to access Facebook on mobile browsers instead of the Facebook app to cut down on battery consumption. Once enabled, it will add a shortcut to Facebook on your phone. Though it will look exactly like the Facebook’s app icon, when opened it will take you to the Facebook page on Opera Mini and not on the app. Users can receive Facebook notifications on their phone without installing the native Facebook or Facebook Lite apps.

Videos will load faster

Videos played on the Opera Mini browser will load a lot faster when the Extreme saver mode is on. Opera has tweaked its video compression tools so the videos will consume up to 50% less data now, allowing videos to load faster. This will come in handy when you are on slow Wi-Fi or 2G mobile networks.

Lower footprint

Another improvement in the Opera Mini is that you can now compress saved webpages. This will save reduce the file size of saved web pages to as low as 10% of the original file size. This can allow users with basic Android phones and limited storage space to save more web pages.
