Nikkei down 0.9% on bailout worry

Tokyo: Japan’s Nikkei share average lost 0.9% on Thursday as Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd and other shippers sank after a key freight index fell, while worry about the US financial sector bailout weighed on the market.

Honda Motor Corp and other automakers slipped on concern about the health of the US economy, with investors turning defensive in thin trade.

The benchmark Nikkei shed 108.50 points to 12,006.53, while the broader Topix was down 1.2% at 1,153.95. Both fell more than 2 percent in early trade.
