Live updates: Sensex closes at 6-month low, rupee below 64 per dollar

Here are the key developments affecting the domestic and international markets today

5:00pm: The rupee closes at 64.24, down 1.09% from its previous close of 63.54, the lowest level since 6 September 2013. Read more: Rupee closes at 20-month low of 64.24 against dollar

3:30pm: The S&P BSE Sensex closes at the lowest level in over six months. The index closed 0.44%, or 118.26 points, lower at 26,599.11. Meanwhile, CNX Nifty ended 0.49%, or 39.70 points, lower at 8,057.30 points, a level last seen on 17 December.

3:24pm: Shares of United Bank of India rise 2% to 28. The bank has reported a 77.6% decline in its net profit to 105 crore in March quarter as compared with 469 crore a year ago. Gross non-performing assets improved to 9.49% in March quarter as against 12.03% last year same quarter.

2:55pm: The S&P BSE Sensex falls as many as 293.38 points to 26,486.40, while the CNX Nifty sheds as many as 100 points to trade below the 8000 mark. Both the indices touched their lowest levels since 17 December 2014.

2:47pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading 0.98%, or 262.13 points, lower at 26,455.24, while the CNX Nifty is down 0.94%, or 76.50 points, at 8,020.50.

IIFL Holdings Ltd rise 5% to 182 after the company reported a 62.22% increase in its net profit to 132 crore in the March quarter as compared with 81.37 crore a year ago.

Shares of oil marketing companies were trading lower after international crude oil prices recovered nearly 45% from its January low of 46.59 $/bbl. Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd falls 6.1% to 558.75, while Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd sheds 3.5% to 722.

2:13pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is now down 174.84 points, or 0.65%, to 26,542.53, while the 50-share Nifty is trading at 8,039.30, down 57.70 points, or 0.71%.

1:59pm: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex is down 129.76 points, or 0.49%, to 26,587.61.

1:40pm: Shares of domestic airlines were trading lower on concerns that higher international crude oil prices may result in weak earnings. Jet Airways (India) Ltd falls as much as 13.5%, while SpiceJet Ltd lost 5.6%.

1:25pm: Biocon shares rise 1.2% after the company said two molecules for treating cancer and arthritis under the drug discovery programme with Mylan have entered global phase-III of clinical trials. The molecules are Pegfilgrastim and Adalimumab.

1:20pm: An SBI Research report said said RBI cut rate by 25 basis point even before its monetary policy review on 2 June as inflation is easing and the US Fed tightening is expected by year-end. The rate cut is most likely to take place after 12 May, when release of consumer proce index (CPI) data is scheduled, it said.

12:51pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 26,619.12, down 98.25 points, or 0.37%.

12:30pm: The Indian rupee weakened for the fifth consecutive session to hit the 64 dper dollar mark as foreign investors sold the currency in the domestic markets.

12:15pm: Shares of information technology (IT) companies are trading higher as investors expect weaker rupee to help boost overseas margins. TCS rises 2.3%, CMC Ltd is up 2.5%, HCL Technologies Ltd climbs 1.5%, while Eclerx Services Ltd is trading up 2%.

12:00pm: Future Retail Ltd DVR shares were trading higher for the fourth consecutive session on back of higher volumes. Since 30 April, the stock has locked upper circuit of 10% every day and gained over 75%. The Future Retail DVR is currently trading at 86.60 on BSE, up 10% from its previous close while Future Retail Ltd falls 1.6% to 118.10.

11:46am: The BSE Sensex is now down 50.87 points, or 0.19%, to 26,666.50.

11:25am: The rupee weakens further to trade 0.6% lower at 63.92 per dollar, a level last seen on 13 September 2013, compared with its previous close of 63.54. Read more.

10:55am: The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex has trimmed all its gains to trade at 26,719.89, up 2.52 points, or 0.01%.

10:40am: Bharat Forge, a maker of safety components for automobile and other sectors, falls as much as 5.1% to over 1-week low. Order inflows of class 8 trucks in North America declined 10% year-on-year in April, as per Freight Transportation Research.

Nomura says it expects 10% volume growth in Bharat Forge’s commercial vehicles in North America in FY16F and 5% growth in FY17.

10:20am: SKS Microfinance falls 2% after Morgan Stanley sold 692,680 shares of the company in a block deal at 458.65 apiece on NSE. Morgan Stanley Asia held 5.27% stake in the company as of March quarter, exchange data showed.

10:08am: The S&P BSE Sensex recovers to trade at 26,815.55, up 98.18 points, or 0.37%. The Nifty, meanwhile, is trading at 8,119.75, up 22.75 points, or 0.28%

10:07am: The BSE market capitalization fell below 99 trillion for the first time since 14 January. At 10am, it stood at 98.73 trillion.

10:05am: Future Retail Ltd falls 3% to 116.45. A huge block deal was executed on the counter on the exchanges, Bloomberg reported. Around 1.2 million equity shares of the company have changed hands in single-block deals. Further details of buyers and sellers were not available.

10:03am: Jindal Steel and Power Ltd falls 2.2% to 131.65 after Naveen Jindal and 14 others were summoned as accused by a special court in the Jharkhand’s Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block allocation scam case.

10:00am: Prestige Estates Projects Ltd climbs 3.2% to 262.75 after the company reported 13% increase in sales bookings at 5,013 crore for 2014-15.

9:58am: SRF Ltd jumps 2% to 965 on news that the company will be included in the future and options segment from 29 May.

9:55am: KEC International Ltd rises 5.6% to 101.15 after the company reported 83% rise in consolidated net profit to 62.89 crore for the quarter ended March.

9:52am: Force Motors Ltd rises 2% to 1,605 apiece after the company reported an increase of 3.16% in its standalone net profit at 46.28 crore for the fourth quarter ended March.

9:50am: Gainers—Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) rises 0.8% to 2,483, while Hero MotoCorp Ltd inches up 0.7% to 2,341.10 ahead of its March quarter earnings.

9:48am: Losers—Hindalco Industries Ltd falls 2.2% to 134.70, while Cipla Ltd drops 2.1% to 622.65.

9:46am: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading flat at 26,702.84, down 14.53 points, or 0.05%.

9:45am: All the sectoral indices were trading lower. The BSE healthcare index is the top loser, down 1.7%, followed by consumer durables, which was down 1.5%.

9:40am: The 30-share Sensex is trading lower by 0.32%, or 84.34 points, at 26,633.03, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of NSE is down 0.76%, or 61.20 points, to 8,035.80.

9:35am: Earnings—BASF India Ltd, Birla Corp. Ltd, Blue Dart Express Ltd, Great Eastern Shipping Co. Ltd, IIFL Holdings Ltd, Jindal Saw Ltd, Piramal Enterprises Ltd, Sintex Industries Ltd, Titan Co. Ltd and United Bank of India.

9:30am: Equity markets open slightly lower after yesterday’s plunge that wiped out all the gains the benchmark indices registered in 2015.

9:15am: The rupee has fallen to 63.82 per dollar, its lowest level in nearly five months, compared with its previous close of 63.54.

9:10am: The dollar rises to 119.60 yen from 119.41 yen in the previous trading session. The euro drops to $1.1338 from $1.1346.

9:05am: US crude is down 65 cents to $60.28 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude dips 55 cents to $67.22 in London.

9:02am: Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slips 1% in morning trading to 19,329.75. It was the first day of trading for the week after the Tokyo market was closed for national holidays. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 loses 0.7% to 5,650.00. South Korea’s Kospi falls 1.5% to 2,073.53. Hong Kong Hang Seng is 0.5% lower at 27,503.39 and China’s Shanghai Composite Index sheds 0.9% to 4,190.80.

9:00am: Asian markets droop after comments from the US Federal Reserve chief fanned fears about the American economy.

8:55am: The S&P 500 fell 9.31 points, or 0.5%, to 2,080.15 on Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 86.22 points, or 0.5%, to 17,841.98. The Nasdaq composite declined 19.68 points, or 0.4%, to 4,919.64.
