Nikkei up 2%, led by exporters

Tokyo, 14 September Japanese stocks surged, with the Nikkei average rising 2% to its highest level in a week on a weaker yen, gains by exporters such as Sony Corp, and active buying of futures.

Sapporo Holdings Ltd shot up on speculation that US hedge fund, Steel Partners, may make a move on the brewery, while video game maker Nintendo Co Ltd powered higher on a target price upgrade and strong sales of its Wii console.

As of 0358 GMT, the benchmark Nikkei was up 2% at 16,140.03, the broader TOPIX index gained 1.26% to 1,542.07. Reuters
