Home >Opinion >Online-views >Did you know | How to make a claim for car insurance and the time the claim process can take

Losing your car to theft may not be that common but accidents definitely are. While having a comprehensive car insurance policy helps since it pays for the damages or theft, what is equally important to understand is: how to make a claim and the time the claim process can take.

In case of an accident

The first thing to do when initiating a claim process is to be prompt. Call up your insurance company and inform them as soon as you meet with an accident or your car gets damaged. If you delay, you may unnecessarily face problems because the insurer would want to know the reason behind such a delay.

Other than that, you will also need to incur the depreciation cost on many parts of the vehicle. For instance if a plastic part needs to be replaced the insurer will bear only 50% of the cost since it charges around 50% as depreciation cost. The turnaround time of settling the claim is around a day.

In case of a theft

But in case of a theft, it can take months to get the claim amount. You first need to inform the police station in your area about the theft and register a first information report. The cops take about 90 days to hunt your car down, failing which they issue a non traceable report. Give that report to your insurer along with other documents such as your policy and registration certificate. Note that at the time of inspection, the insurer will ask you for the keys of your vehicle. It’s important to have the car keys in order to prove that the car was stolen, unless of course you were mugged.

After submitting the report, the insurance company will also make some enquiries at their end. The insurer will settle the claim typically within 15 days.
